Countries with less than 1 million people or less than 20 000 sq km not included. Updated for 2022, 2023, 2024. Global Peace Index along with most of the rest of the world recognizes a country that Jet Punk and the US do not.
Start by naming any country that France borders. Then name any country that borders any of those countries. Then keep going until there are no more countries left to name.
Why is Turkey on this list but China isn't? China currently warring with India, supressing dissent in Hong Kong, Tibet and in the far W, threatening Taiwan, making trouble with the Philippines etc etc.
I like various rankings but they all have problems especially when they try to quantify something that is a quality. For the most part, indices are useful to see overall patterns e.g. Nordic countries are usually rated well no matter the index.
In this ranking two things stand out - China's position in the middle of the list and the US in the bottom third. 10 years ago their positions were opposite. The methodology weighs internal peace at 60% and the US won/t rank well in homicide rate, ease of weapon acquisition, number of internal security personnel, crime rate, etc. Why China's ranking has improved so significantly over the decade is a mystery - they have serious internal and external conflicts and a high level of military and security personnel. Turkey's position comes from political instability, internal conflicts and border skirmishes. It's not Turkey's ranking that's a problem it's China's ranking that's the problem.
With too much time on my hands, I took a look at the appendices of the GPI report. Given their methodology and breakdown, I can see how the US (and Turkey) ended up with a high score but China's relatively low score is still puzzling. It appears some countries were rewarded for containing political dissent - Oman, UAE, Kuwait, and China all rated high in the Societal Safety and Security domain. Peace through strength I suppose.
