Why, nearly everyone is this site knows the countries of the world (if you are on here more than a few weeks), but not everyone knows all the islands. And for those that do know borneo, by the same principle, the countries of the world come up so often on this site and Borneo less so, the information might be less readily available. The countries of the world are ready to be typed out, something less often asked might require some digging.
I don't find it surprising. Like more people would know Haiti than hispaniola.
Thanks to the Countries of the World quiz, I now know all the countries of the world and the general area they're in. So I just typed in Brunei without even reading the clues. I completely blanked on Borneo even though I knew it. I guess I'm too tired to be taking quizzes.
It's because the countries of the world quiz. Lots more people on this site know about Brunei than Borneo because of that. I had to think about Borneo for a bit but got Brunei immediately.
Peking is still called Peking but with the introduction of Pinyin it's written differently as Beijing. Anyway the name of the city didn't changesince the fourteenth century.
I think the -stan countries deserve a lot more attention. I mean, Afghanistan and Pakistan are obviously known, sadly only due to political problems, and maybe you know Kazakhstan, but that is where it stops for most people. Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan also exist, and are actually very rich in culture and sights as well.
I think that definitely more tourists should come to these countries that want to see raw, beautiful nature and blooming islamic culture. If you go to Uzbekistan, you can follow the trails of the Silk Road in Samarqand, and if you go to Kyrgyzstan you can hike on the Tian Shan (Celestial Mountains). Obviously, all of these countries have interesting history due to them being part of the Ancient Chinese Empire, having islamic influence and having a history in the soviet union as well.
Just a little tip from me to you if you are looking for an interesting, empty place to go on vacation.
By the way, they are also good for winter/skiing vacations, due to them having a lot of snow in winter and rather cold temperatures. Each one of the countries have an at least little part of mountains.
And...I'm not Uzbek, Turkmen, Tajikistani, Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Afghan or Pakistani. Just an Austrian guy trying to give you a "secret tip" for your next holiday.
