I had only ever heard "Mombasa" mentioned in old contexts like "Bombay", so I assumed it had changed names. I didn't know that it was still a city!

If someone did want to be exhaustive here is the top 312 over 100k population. Probably best to limit it to top 20 or 25 though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_towns_and_cities_with_100,000_or_more_inhabitants/cityname:_M

Interestingly Mbuji-mayi has 50% more people than Munich so maybe people should learn where it is.

Minneapolis looks like it could be Madison, Marseille looks like Monaco, Malaga looks like Melilla, and Maputo looks like Mbabane. Maybe allow some nearby M cities as type-ins?

It's fair as it is - in all cases the correct answer is the larger, better known city which first comes to mind (except in the case of Marseille/Monaco where the latter is also well-known)

Matola should be accepted for Maputo. In 2017 Matola already had a population of 1032k compared to 1088k for Maputo and Maputo had a slight Population decline while Matola's Population increased rapidly so its safe to assume Matola has a comparable if not greater population than Maputo. They also border each other and and on a world map almost not distinguishable

Would have expected Munich, Memphis and Minsk, too. The last one, being a capital, should be definitely added. And for the same reason maybe Malé and Managua as well.
