Cool quiz! Will be waiting to see when this quiz gets featured. Will you do this type quiz with both the Americas (North and South America together), or separate?
Ander, it would make sense to do a single America quiz not only because of the way some people are taught in the world but also because on their own, American map quizzes are short and easy and sometimes leave something to be desired.
I was trying to be funny with Eurafriasia - didn't realize Afro-Eurasia was a real thing. It's my personal pet peeve when people want to put "The Americas" together as one continent while maintaining that Europe and Asia are separate. I don't see what's wrong with having an easy quiz now and then, although remembering all the islands doesn't make North America that easy IMO.
@ander217 Except that, for historical reasons, the Eurasia analogy is not an apt one. Maybe you're just annoyed that some people see it differently, cause, as it was mentioned above, they were (and still are) taught that way. Also, fyi, it was first considered America as a single continent. The separation made in some countries is a rather recent development.
@Ferbin It's just that Europe and Asia are in no ways separate, like North America and South America are by the Panama Canal. The lines making up those two continents are arbitrary, as the presence of the Ural Mountains does not mean that the two continents are separate.
They do it weird on this site. Since the majority of Russia's population is in Europe, it's considered a European country. Even though this quiz has nothing to do with population.
It's not like JetPunk came up with the idea to put Russia into Europe. As a European I had to learn the capital of Russia along the others since Russia is part of the map of Europe. And not because of the population but because of it's capital actually being in Europe.
Russia speaks an indo-European language, as you said, most of its population is in Europe, its capital is in Europe, and most of the Russian-identifying population is in Europe. Calling Russia Asian is like calling the United Kingdom during its colonial era North American becuase of Canada.
I guess he had his reasons for leaving Russia off this map, but it really isn't that big of a deal to me. However, if it had been included, I wouldn't have had to sit here searching for my last missing country because the big, white Mongolia-shaped hole in the map would have clued me in!
Russia was originally only in Europe, is culturally European, linguistically European, mostly lives in Europe. It only controls Siberia because it took it away from the people living there. That's like saying the UK is north american because of Canada. Or that the US is part of Oceania because we own Guam.
The Majority of Russia lives on the European side, but there also some other groups (not indo-european in the east of russia and also you could debate why Turkey is in here, cyprus, and even Georgia
Jetpunk logic seems to be a country can only be part of one continent and not more than that. So even though its geographically huge in Asia and its absence is rather noticeable they refuse to include it on any list of countries in Asia.
I don't think anyone has used that name for it in decades. They've been the Republic of China for a while now, but people refer to them as just Taiwan, so I have no idea where you got that name from
Israel is a part of many European organizations and competes in several European sports, entertainment, etc competitions (for example, it is a member of the Union of European Football Associations). Would you argue that it's in Europe?
Australia is a part of the AFC. Would you say that Australia is a part of Asia? Australia participates in the Eurovision, so does Israel, would you say that Australia and Israel are European, of course not.
What bothers me is the inconsistency on Jetpunk. You could ask any Cypriot, or any European, and they'd tell you that, of course, Cyprus is unambiguously European! The only counter-argument Jetpunk offers seems to be geographical proximity, but then, Jetpunk also considers Trinidad and Tobago to be North American, when you could almost jump there from Venezuela. Jetpunk also considers the island of New Guinea to be half-Asian, half-Oceanian. I think we should just admit that continent are as much a political notion as a geographical one, and politically, Cyprus is unambiguously European. I don't know why it's become such a matter of principle for Jetpunk.
I get so tired of taking these quizzes and then seeing the supposed results. People, you need to have more self-respect than spend time googling to get the right answers just so you look smart. There is absolutely NO WAY that the AVERAGE score on this quiz is 44.
I find 44 a pretty reasonable average. The people taking these quizzes have more than an average knowledge on geography. And some people may take these multiple times.
To elaborate on what was mentioned above, many people who take these quizzes are geography nerds who can ace Countries of the World. 44 is a logical average for the quiz, but it does not reflect what the average person would get.
I know them all, but tend to forget some (easier done when under time pressure and with an empty map..)
I got 43/48 and the average is 42 atm. I think it is that low, not high, mostly because were like me, knowing them all, but some slipped their mind. I think the people that actually only knew a few arent the main reason the average isnt higher. There might be a few of those taking the quiz. But I think 80% know them all>
Timer is a weird thing. Without a timer I could get wayy more countries in a certain amount of minutes, but once a timer is set, especially when it goes under two minutes, my mind puts on the brakes, and or panics.
(Reminds me of pets, if you let them go into a box on their own it is fine, but once they are pressured.... in the best case they refuse, in the worse case, mayhem... atleast get my cat in a basket is worse than wrestling a lion or bear haha... but it seems I ve gotten off topic...~-o-~
My understanding is that there are 2 types of users: 1 which uses this as a learning tool, and a 2nd which comes here for a daily wordle-like game.
The wordle users know all 193/197 countries, maps, probably flags, probably >75 capitals. They use this as a refresher, or just for fun/game/competition.
From what I've seen, I think about 8% of people "cheat" (there are some esoteric quizzes, and if you look at a few answer distributions, I think there's a jump in percentage between 100% right, and 99% right, the shows as a spike on the distribution curve). You can call these people cheaters, or maybe they are also using the quizzes as a learning tool (who knows, maybe someone wants to try to memorize something like "National flowers of Africa", or "List of curling champions 1960-1980", etc. I do not possess that capability. Maybe it just satisfies their curiosity or obsession, & helps remember the more important ones).
Also, when I was learning countries, I think I had a map open at some points. I had to start somewhere, & it made the process faster. (I didn't have to do the Caribbean 1,000 times, trying to get past Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, ... what were the others?). Roate memorization is effective I guess.
Yet in other JetPunk quizzes, Trinidad and Tobago is considered a part of North America, whilst being closer to South America than Cyprus is to Asia... o_O
"Here's some land left over from your old country. It's the same size as Philadelphia, one of America's most crowded cities. But you have more people than Philly and we'll take 2/3 of that land." I don't know why they can't just capitulate like the South African natives did for so long. Seems rather selfish, huh?
Any chance of a missing countries button with the dots? Or would that defeat the purpose. Anyway if I had that I would have gotten Cyprus (the only one i missed :P)
I think Russia should be considered Asia just like Turkey is. It makes no sense a country which is only about of its territory 20% located in Europe be considered exclusively part of that continent...
Trinidad and Tobago is closer to South America than North America, but considered North American... The proximity debate kinda falls flat in this instance.
the one thing i think you should change is either add russia or take away cyprus.. i didn't get cyprus because i assumed that since you counted russia as part of europe you would count cyprus as part of europe too...
Why is Turkey and Cyprus allowed, but not Russia? I know it is thought of as a Europian country, but Turkey and Cyprus were as well. I am just saying that if you add these countries, I would suggest adding Russia as well. Or remove Turkey and Cyprus. This is not a complaint, I am just giving advice on which you do not have to take. :)
I’m assuming that it wasn’t included due to 1. Moscow being in Europe rather than in Asia, as Ankara and Nicosia are (at least on JetPunk) and 2. most of the Russian population being in Europe, as the two largest cities by far in Russia (St. Petersburg and Moscow) are both in Europe. On the other hand, Turkey’s two largest cities (Istanbul and Ankara) are both at least partly situated on the Asian continent and Cyprus’ largest cities (Nicosia and Limassol) are both on Asia as well.
The thirty-one most populated cities in Turkey are all in Asia (I just checked) and the vast majority of both population and land of Turkey are in Asia, so I would say that totally justifies Turkey being Asian.
It's the Siachen glacier. No country wanted it till 1983. But then India and Pakistan fought for it. Currently India holds it. Idk why most maps leave it out of India.
Over 3/4 of Russia’s population is Russian, which is defined as “ an East Slavic ethnic group native to Eastern Europe, who share a common Russian ancestry, culture, and history”.
Russia is East Slavic; the countries that are majority East Slavic or have large populations are: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia.
None of those are Asian.
They originate from the Kievan Rus state. Which was in Europe.
Asian culture is either Middle Eastern or Eastern Asian. Saying that Russia is, for the most part, like Iraq or South Korea is extremely false and shows that you know NOTHING about Russia.
Rule of thumb for jetpunk-quizzes: the country belongs to the continent, where the country`s capital is located. As far as I can see, this rule always works.
Madagascar is nowhere close to Asia, but if your argument is that Madagascar was settled by people from what is now Indonesia, then Australia, all of South America, and all of North America would be part of Europe since most people in those countries have some European heritage.
If Cyprus is in Asia, Trinidad and Tobago is in South America. But Cyprus should be considered in Europe, just as Trinidad and Tobago is considered part of North America.
Taiwan is just a province of China, I just don't understand why it's a country in so many of those quizzes. What's going on with these quiz makers??? This is such an obvious mistake!!!
Russia speaks an indo-European language, as you said, most of its population is in Europe, its capital is in Europe, and most of the Russian-identifying population is in Europe. Calling Russia Asian is like calling the United Kingdom during its colonial era North American becuase of Canada.
no discussion needed^^

I also brush up on it a couple times/year.
But that will never do, will it.
So technically Cyprus is Asian
the one thing i think you should change is either add russia or take away cyprus.. i didn't get cyprus because i assumed that since you counted russia as part of europe you would count cyprus as part of europe too...
2nd time : Forgot Kuwait

• Egypt has land in Asia, also Madagascar
• No information about the fact that Palestine isnt writable
• Why is there Turkeyy but no Russia? Turkey also has European land (Constantinople)
2. Constantinople is now called Istanbul (it was renamed about 100 years ago, and isn’t the capital of Turkey.
3. The capital of Egypt isn’t in Asia, though the Sinai Peninsula is, while Madagascar has no Asian land.
If Cyprus is in Asia, Trinidad and Tobago is in South America. But Cyprus should be considered in Europe, just as Trinidad and Tobago is considered part of North America.
Oh, ok. Not including THE BIGGEST COUNTRY in Asia.
Second Cyprus is a European Country not an Asian one
But alright quiz
Took me about a minute when i was at 45/48 to realize I was missing Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia lol
