Listen. We all know about the famous JetPunk Cyprus debates, but just accept that it is geographically CLOSER to asia, but in every other sense is european. It is in the EU for petes sake. ITS EUROPEAN
If it’s so called “European”, and also it’s in the European Union @MrMatrixMusicMan, then you might as well remove Norway and the UK too, and Russia, Belarus and more, even the UN recognized it as a Asian country
Don't confuse EU with Europe, but to be in the EU you must be in the European continent. Cyprus is in Europe, as is a part of Turkey. If one is to count Russia, which straddles both continents and mainly in Asia, one has to count Turkey also btw.
Turkey is in Asia, as the majority of its landmass and population are both in Asia. Russia is primarily European because the majority of its population is in the European portion of Russia.
Turkey is not necessarily a European country, as the vast majority of its land lies in Europe. Turkey also is more culturally similar to Asia, rather than Europe.
The vast majority of Russia is in Asia as well. The reality is this is a physical geography quiz - which is about where things are located. Turkey is in Europe (obviously not all of it). But politically, the government center of Russia is Moscow - in Europe, and for Turkey it is in Ankara. But on the other hand - most of you would have said Istanbul, which is also both in Europe and Asia.
I think Turkey should be included on both maps, as should Russia.
By that rationale, Russia should be Asia, as the vast majority of that nation lies in Asia. I just wish Jetpunk would include both Turkey and Russia as the trans-continental countries that they are.
never sure whether or not Cyprus counts as Europe as it is part of the European Union I would strongly consider it part Europe in these sorts of quizzes.
Then France should be included on the South America quiz. Would that also be acceptable? I'm not saying that it is or isn't, but you should consider that people would probably get pretty mad.
@divantilya - the Middle East is not a continent that is easily definable, it is a region that has a number of different definitions. However, Egypt is always considered to be part of the Middle East in any academic or serious publication on the subject.
the geographical borders of europe stretch from the arctic sea and follow the ural mountains through western siberia. It then follows the ural river into the caspian sea which includes a little bit of kazakhstan. After the Caspian sea it follows the greater caucus mountains which include azerbaijan and georgia but not armenia. It then goes into the black sea and cuts through istanbul, including turkey, and cuts to the eastern side of the greek archipelago. it then follows the mediteranian including malta but excluding cyprus to asia. It finally then comes out at the bottle neck below spain.
Since I know all the countries and there's plenty of time if you do, I tried to guess countries that are not connected to each other first since it made for a funny looking map.
@HatemAli - sorry, not all of us here agree on that. I'm one of those who don't perceive Kosovo as a country, even though the government of my country (against the majority opinion) recognised independence of this region
This site is not the American perspective, as Taiwan is included as a country. It is more of the Quizmaster's opinion, and all the country quizzes are based off the Countries of the World quiz.
Wow. This is the highest average I've ever seen on a Jetpunk quiz (43/45 at the date of this comment). Seriously, I know this site has some real geography nerds, and I'm one of them (I got all), yet I'm still rather shocked, and quite fascinated really, that the lowest answer was guessed by 90% of takers! I assume these percentages will go down with time as this quiz is on the front page now.
We can debate whether Turkey should be included or not (and Russia and Cyprus for that matter), both sides of the argument have merits, but JetPunk takes a particular line and is consistent in its approach, and perhaps we should just accept that (because no matter what approach they take, they could be criticised).
I think Russia, Cyprus and Turkey should all be in the map of Europe quizzes and map of Asia quizzes because Cyprus is culturally similar to Europe but is located in Asia, Russia is both in Europe and Asia. Turkey is also located on both Asia and Europe so it should also be in both quizzes.
I really like these blank map quizzes. As for the countries that straddle two different continents. There will never total agreement. As for this site they place Russia in Europe and Turkey and Cyprus in Asia. Get over it already.
Actually opinions do matter. The exact borders of Europe, Asia and Africa have no basis in objective fact and are effectively social or cultural constructs. The concept of "Asia" is especially one that has zero connection to reality except for where people like to draw lines. And here Turkey is considered an Asian country, even though some of it is considered to be in Europe.
TWM03: I agree with you concerning Europe and Asia; they are artificial constructs. However, Africa is definitely separated from Asia by the Red Sea and Sinai Peninsula.
So objectively why is Malta not in Africa (or is it)? Or if you are just talking about the continent itself and not which islands should be included, where exactly is the land border between Africa and Asia? It is generally taken to be the Suez canal, but the concepts of Africa and Asia predate the canal. The Sinai Peninsula is quite poorly defined, as are all peninsulas - where exactly are its borders and why? That said, I kind of agree that considering Africa a separate continent makes some sense, but no more than considering North and South America separate and drawing some sort of border between them.
Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Cyprus are transcontinental across Europe and Asia. I feel like they should be included for quizzes on both continents.
I only missed Czech Republic because i forgot how to spell it, i also got 3 or 4 more wrong because i ran out of time,I type really slow, Its a great quiz though
How do you "deliberately forget" something? The deliberate nature would seem to belie the claim. Deliberately OMITTING something, however, is quite different.
Need to add Turkey (Thracia). Either that or eliminate Russia!! Turkey's largest city Istanbul is in Europe and much of its culture lies there. It is so unfair to have Russia as Europe and Turkey not!
I wish these empty map quizzes would have more defined borders like the quizzes where the map is already present. Wouldn’t make it any easier, just a personal aesthetic preference. I think it would look much better.
Don't confuse EU with Europe, but to be in the EU you must be in the European continent. Cyprus is in Europe, as is a part of Turkey. If one is to count Russia, which straddles both continents and mainly in Asia, one has to count Turkey also btw.
