relessness, I think it's not ok that Poland includes clue "Auschwitz", that was built in Poland by Germans. Clues to Germany ain't include e.g. Nazi etc. Aren't there other clues?
+14
Level 17
Feb 7, 2013
While Auschwitz IS located in Poland and it thus fulfills its job as a clue, I can see why this might be seen as problematic, especially as Germany or Austria don't have "Hitler" as clues. This does indeed seem a bit unfair. Perhaps we could get something like "mazurka" instead of that. Mind you, the only other clues that I think could be construed as negative are "Mafia" for Italy (first clue, indeed!) "Cold War" for Russia (the Cold War affected a lot of countries). Now I don't think a quiz like this should necessarily be politically correct, but some of these choices seem a bit bizarre, if accurate.

Negative clues or not, these are accurate historical depictions. You can't pretend that history didn't happen just because it may make someone uncomfortable.
+17

You know, this is a quiz of history, civics and current events. When one hears the word "Mafia" which country does one think of first? -

True, Italy is not the only country with Cosa Nostra, but that word

evokes Italy, just as Hitler evokes Nazism and the Cold War evokes the USSR... so get real! -

First of all facts are facts. In my opinion, not talking about a negative event in history is the same as forgetting it. We should never forget what happened to so many Jews during that time in history. Because of this I think the clue is fitting.
+1
Level 47
Sep 17, 2013
First of all we should never forget that it was German concentration camp, not Polish one. So I don't think it's particularly fitting.
+12
Level 75
Sep 19, 2013
We also seem to have forgotten what happened to so many non-Jews during that time. 6 million Jews were murdered, but so were 5-6 million other people, notably Gypsies (who lost about the same proportion of their European population as the Jews, if nowhere near the same number of people), but also the physically and mentally handicapped, trade unionists, communists, homosexuals, political dissenters...We certainly need to remember the horrors committed by the Nazis, but I reckon it's important not to let the true scale of the crime be overshadowed by concentrating solely on one group of victims. It's inconceivable that any Western country could again treat Jews the way they were treated down the ages, but the Gypsies still face terrible discrimination wherever they are, which to me speaks of a lesson not learned.
+2
Level 73

For sure - don't whitewash history. The objection is that the clue represents more a feature of German than of Polish history. As someone noted above, Auschwitz is also a German name. In that way it's like having Danzig or Breslau for a Polish clue, which would be fine, if a bit weird.
+1

+3
Level 60
Jan 28, 2018
Having been to Auschwitz, I can tell you that the first camp was build as a Polish Army Barracks long before it was taken over by the Germans. Birkenau, the second part of the camp, was built by prisoners, many of whom came from places like Poland and Hungary, so it may have been planned by the Germans, but it certainly wasn't built by them.

Belgium is very well known for its chocolate. You don't take one clue and think of that on its own, you take all of them to get to the right country.
+1
Level 74
Jun 24, 2020
Likewise, you could take cheese as a clue for Switzerland, but then a lot of countries are known for cheese. However, Swiss watches are uniquely, well, Swiss, whereas Belgian chocolate is a unique brand in, well...
+1
Level 58
Nov 9, 2021
I don't think that that analogy quite holds, as Switzerland is especially known for chocolate, while many countries are known for cheese, such as Italy or France.
+4
Level 66
Nov 11, 2020
The Belgium clues bother me a little, because while it's clear that the clues are meant to be about Belgium, all of them fit France as well. France has a rich and well-known chocolate tradition, the invention of French fries is disputed between Belgium and France, and France has one of the three EU capitals (Strasbourg). Maybe it would be worth adding something more uniquely Belgian, like the Manneken Pis, or the Atomium, or maybe something from the rich Belgian comic strip tradition?

I like this quiz and all the debates. I was about to tell that I feel ofended by "Chopin" for Poland when he became famous because of France (same for Marie Curie who have been proposed by someone). I would prefer Leon Shiller. For us is the same debate than Oscar Wilde for Ireland and uk... However it doen't really matter and for the Aushwitz topic you can replace with Schindler factory or Kaczyński brothers. And thanks again for this funny quiz!

Maria Skłodowska-Curie was polish

Fryderyk Chopin was polish too, Chopin has french second name because of his father and Skłodowska because of her french husband Pierre, so why the ... you feel offended? They were 100% polish but they moved to France, that doesn't make them french anyway. Messi is famous because of Spain, but is he spanish? ;)

@ander217: I'm not crazy about the Ljubljana clue - as it reduces the clue to "name the biggest/most famous city in..." There are plenty other quizzes for that.

Giving the capital Ljubljana as one of the clue gives the impression that there is nothing else to say about this country.
