You should definitely clarify that. Or, like I prefer, add the overseas territories to the quiz. For example, Cyprus is closer to the British bases on the island than any other country. I'm pretty sure British and French territories are near some of the other countries as well.
Palestine is not one of the jetpunk countries. And you can go check the countries of the world quiz has 196 I am not leaving any out, (Or I would have said I thought it was 195), the person above has put an extra one in, or just made a typo/misremembered.
Great quiz! Though I double-checked your distance between Australia and Papua New Guinea, which seemed much too small to me. And indeed it is: Google Maps tells me that the island of Saibai in the Torres Strait (part of Queensland) lies about 2.32 miles off the shore of New Guinea, instead of the 53 miles that the quiz has.
It makes some sort of sense, a mile is a thousand paces, that is how it got its name. The name for feet makes sense aswell. So there is logic in it, however as how easy it is to work with, with all these subdivisions of measures which have no relation to each other, not too convenient. So "not sensible" might be a better term than "no sense"?
Miles could make some sense, as one mile corresponds to a minute of latitude; this makes life easier when working with a nautical map (and, of course, it assumes that you use nautical miles; any other kind of mile just adds unnecessary complexity).
Wait a sec.... How did you get those columns with different headings? I've looked all over the quiz making page, but I cannot find it! Great quiz, though!
I'm sure you already know this, but you go to manual settings and click "Add Outer Box". You can import answers into the box rows and change the heading. That's probably what relessness did.
Just goes to show how much maps are skewed. I was sure Vanuatu was closer to Aus than NZ was, it's 1742 km away. But because New Zealand is so much further south, the NZ distance looks more.
What a great quiz! I am very surprised that I got 100%! I really like these random quizzes. It's so creative, I would've never thought of making something like this. :)
You see it in 1 sec on the map, totally clear no question about it, no need to measure. Iran is separated with only a little bit of water (as is pakistan, but a little bit more water). Qatar does compete with somalia, but definitely not with iran or pakistan.
Em no.. just check a map, andorra is about 100km further away from monaco than san marino. About 500km, so it is not even a near miss.
Was this just a random thought? A lot of people seem to think that when you are adamant enough and simply state something as fact it magically becomes true. If something is a near miss and you are convinced then it is atleast understandable (but I still advice to check it first before claiming other things are wrong)
The Australian figures seem to have a few errors. Saibai Island, Queensland is less than 4km from the PNG mainland. Boigu Island, Queensland is only 122km from the southern tip of the border between Indonesia's Papua Province and PNG. Lizard Island, Queensland appears to be 1,360km to Mono Island in the Solomons, though there may be closer points I've missed. The Manawatawhi Islands in NZ are about 1241km to Lord Howe Island, New South Wales. The Timor figures seem about right as best I can tell.
None of these islands I've mentioned are external territories (though Lord Howe Island has a great degree of practical autonomy), so I think these are the right figures, or at least a great deal closer than those given in the quiz.
I would argue that France should probably bump the Solomons off the list, though, since France d'outre-mer is a part of France in the same sense Hawaii and Alaska are a part of the USA, and New Caledonia is slightly closer than NZ at 1214km.
I was a bit surprised that Greece wasn't in the top 5 of closest countries for Cyprus, but then I looked at the map and was like "Duh of course all of them are closer!"
fun quiz - thanks! Took me a long time for my head to wrap my head around how close Bhutan was to Bangladesh. I think of Asia having such massive distances. Mind blown!
Australia is only 2-3 miles off of Papua new guineas coast at closest due to a small island chain north of the mainland, its part of queensland so it shouldn't be counted as an overseas territory
TL;DR It makes sense, it is just more complex
