Plus Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Islands, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, etc, etc. if you want to nit-pick.

Jervis bay is technically its own territory, but when we talk about the 6 states and 2 territories, Jervis bay is not included

What has name Ivy League universities got to do with geography?

Because, you know, they're all located somewhere...

Or maybe because they teach geography...

Or... nope - I'm out of ideas

Human geography = geography

It is a regional association (all schools located in New England or the Mid-Atlantic states).

Is that what Ivy League means? I thought it was just the name given to the most elite universities in the US
+2
Level 66

The Ivy League is a sports league--the schools in it all play each other in inter-collegiate sports, under the auspices and organizational structure of that league, which serves also as an administrative liaison with the NCAA (I think!).

The Ivy league is a sports league, but it's known to be made up of the best colleges in the US.

I don't even know what Ivy league is tbh

I was left with a hanging L from Cornell that messed up the next couple of answers I typed. Correct spelling should be expected for Ivy League colleges.

Lille is definitely in France's top ten. I know it's part of a conurbation which itself would be 4th or 5th largest conurbation in France, but |Lille itself certainly has a population larger than that of Montpellier

I kept typing Lille as well. I ruled out Montpellier because it is much smaller.

In Australia we routinely use the shorthand of SA, WA, ACT, NT, Vic, Tas, Qld, NSW. It would be best if you said abbreviations can't be used as I wasted time trying to save time. If some abbreviations are accepted and not others it is very confusing.
+11
Level 45
Jan 30, 2019
The obvious problem with allowing abbreviations like 'SA' and 'WA' is that you could trigger those answers unintentionally whilst typing other words. For example, if you went to type Saudi Arabia for the Red Sea countries, you would get the answer for South Australia.

Level 87
Apr 9, 2019
Right. The other abbreviations are far too general to be acceptable. While "NSW" seems to be accepted in all quizzes, I can think of nothing else it could stand for but the Australian state. Not so for WA, SA, etc. Heck, NT could even be an obsolete version of Windows!

Similarly NYC, DC or Philly are normally accepted as common and not ambigous, while LA isn't.

For Australian States, these words should be accepted:

"Capital"

"Western"

since I tried Capital, Wester and South and got confused when they didn't trigger.

And also Germany, Czechia/Slovakia for the Warsaw Pact countries.

I disagree. Those countries didn't exist in the days of the Warsaw Pact, while the USSR did.

Manila is closer than Thimphu. Manila has a distance of 2820km and that of Thimphu has a distance of 2823km
+1
Level 63
Apr 10, 2019
If I measure the distance on Google Maps by clicking on the city names from afar (assuming that chooses the center) Manila is closer. If I go by Google search Google says Thimphu is closer. Beijing is a big city. So it really depends which spot was chosen for measurement.

I really wish "capital territory" was accepted. I never remember to type "Australian capital" and I always get it wrong. It's obviously Australian if the clue is asking about Australia. You don't have to type Washington DC to get the US capital district.
