It's a pity that the real historical Counties of England were butchered by the bureaucrats of London, done to create more bureaucrats and a crying shame on the people of England for allowing it to happen.

Thankfully most are still intact, not too much butchering was done! I know what you mean, though, I'm not fond of metropolitan counties myself. I'd prefer if they remained part of shire counties officially for the traditional link but were governed as standalone metropolitan units for practical purposes.
