You're correct. Am Swedish, we've never considered ourselves Baltic by any means and are culturally not close to the Baltic states. We're Scandinavians.
Groot(e) rivier just means big river. So (wouldnt it be) sort of a nick name. Ofcourse over time in some instances the description of something becomes the real name. But since it allready has a name. (It might just be when living near london calling it the big city, cause it is the biggest around)
IN WW2 - Sweden provided Nazi Germany with iron ore, steel, etc. which assisted Nazi armaments and nullified the UK blockade against Nazi Germany......... not quite neutral.
if you're going off neutral countries selling to warring countries then none in Europe were really neutral, Sweden sold a lot of raw materials to Germany, Ireland sold a lot of food stuffs to Britain, Switzerland bankrolled half the third Reich and the Netherlands tried to be neutral but Germany just didn't get that memo, Sweden was officially neutral though but was just trying to make a quick buck!
I like your description of what happened to the Netherlands. Apparently the Germans weren't fluent in Dutch.
Sweden also basically had the choice of being neutral and selling Germany material or ending up like Norway and having the German military come and visit. Most of Germany's neighbors (Poland, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, France) have found out the hard way that the German military are not good visitors.
It took me long enough to learn all the capital cities of the -stan countries, and just when I thought "YUS! Astana", I find out I need to learn more names of cities...
I would like to contest The Gambia's inclusion in this quiz. The Gambia is the official name of the country and that is more than 6 letters. Thanks! Great quiz, too, I like it!
Bolivia is officially 'The Plurinational State of Bolivia,' the UK is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,' and North Korea is 'the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.'
Except literally no one says "The Bolivia". The Gambia is very common. But then again, so is The Ukraine and no one would balk at Ukraine being labelled as 7 letters.
"European country neutral in WWII" could be Turkey, which was the only reason I answered the previous question with Turkey as the answer. Now Jetpunk considers all of Turkey to be Asian, but that doesn't eliminate it as an actual possible answer.
I'm from China and in my stereotypes I thought many foreigners didn't know that the official name of Taiwan is Republic of China. It really surprised me that nobody here is confusing about the Taiwan answer.
just sayin'
DO YOU GUYS REALLY SCAN YOUR NAVY?
P.S
pls no hate comments.
