Cyprus is in Europe because of the EU. Israel is in Europe because of the UEFA. Australia is in Europe because of the Eurovision. The Philippines are in Europe, because they are Roman Catholic. French Guyana is in Europe because it is part of France. Brazil is in Europe because it borders France. All countries are in Europe. And also Mars, because Olympus Mons is Greek, and Greece is in Europe.
The EU is not comparable to any of the other things you listed. I love a bunch of non-Cypriot people deciding where Cyprus is. I am Cypriot and literally every other Cypriot person I know considers Cyprus to be in Europe, but keep going off I guess
There is enough cultural significance between Asia and Europe (for the most part) that they can be considered different continents. When they were defined the cultural significance was even larger as the Ottoman empire hadn't expanded to bridge the gap somewhat.
This quiz is pretty much proof that Cyprus is in Europe. Cyprus borders the UK, the UK is in Europe, therefore Cyprus is in Europe! I'll take my "Geographer of the Year" Award now please.
eurasia literally has zero geographical divides, especially the way that modern nations came to be, so we can only split them culturally and historically and, in that way, cyprus literally can only be part of europe. it has nothing to do with asia
Interestingly the borders between Cyprus and the Sovereign Base areas are completely unmarked and unpatrolled. You would never know when you cross over if you didn't have a map with you to tell you.
I've been to both the (southern, Greek-aligned) Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, on the same trip, as do many tourists. Crossing back and forth is easy and informal. Curiously the two crossings in downtown Nicosia are both pedestrian-only, and you have to head 5km west into the suburbs to drive across. The North and South operate as fully functioning separate countries, and it has always puzzled me why no countries (apart from Turkey of course) recognise the northern half as such. The south is very Greek, and the north is very Turkish, so maybe Europe meets Asia in the middle of this delightful island.
If it puzzles you why no country recognizes the northern part, it means you have zero knowledge of the history of the place and how the northern part came to be "separate".
I mean, it's cool that you have enjoyed your stay there, and strolling across the border. So have I when I visited. However, I also made the effort to read up a little about the History of the place. And I talked to some of the people. Both of these make it absolutely obvious why noone does - and noone should - recognise the illegal occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkey.
Agreed. Including the British Overseas Territory (BOT) of Akrotiri and Dhekelia was Dan's idea when this was featured. In general, in our quizzes (ie all of the un-featured ones) we exclude BOTs, because although they come under the jurisdiction of the UK, they do not form a part of it.
The Caucasus Mountains
The Caspian Sea
It really is a single entity regardless of anything.
Sweet quiz though!
