Saint Martin is the French half of the same island that Sint Maarten occupies the other half of. The type-ins that work for Sint Maarten are "Sint Martin" and "St Maarten".
My understanding was that those three places have a legal status roughly equivalent to Scotland, Wales, or England: constituent countries of a larger entity that is the sovereign state. Is that not a correct perception?
I know about Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and Bermuda but didn't expect to see them here. Could you perhaps include in the description that this is not limited sovereign states, general Jetpunk countries or United Nations Member States?
Since the bio of the quiz says 'closest countries,' could you add a note stating that not all of the answers listed are included in the UN 193/195 recognised nations (or an alternate source you'd prefer)? most users here won't know to try territories because they're not classified as countries on Jetpunk or by many international bodies, as they aren't sovereign nations.
In case we've made #2 in this series just for you. Countries 197 to 205 are nowhere to be seen in that one. In the meantime, we hope you got to learn a bit about Aruba.
Whatever I've learned about Aruba probably has more to do with the time I spent there last year than it does with this quiz...
Anyway, the other quizzes in your excellent "Countries closest to..." series indicate very clearly when an "external territory or autonomous region" is included (Canada quiz), or when the quiz contains countries that "appear in the the Countries 197 to 205 quiz" (Cuba quiz).
The Netherlands quiz includes Aruba et al, but that's also fine because it's clearly explained.
Fix these ones to those standards and please make more, they're great!
Now, it looks like what you’ve done here is deliberately put some ‘trick’ answers here, knowing exactly what would happen… people would question those answers, since the standard on Jetpunk is that, unless otherwise specified, ‘countries’ refer to the 196 that we’re all used to, not constituent countries of sovereign states (fair enough, you didn’t state what entity the mystery location was, but I guess you could have plumped for an oil rig if you wanted to). Thus achieving the real purpose, the opportunity to belittle people and act smug and superior. Are you aware of quite how infuriating it is to be told to ‘go away and do your homework?’ Every comment section, on every website, has someone who must insist on questioning everyone else’s education. It’s narcissistic, obnoxious and tiresome. Is it not possible to leave that on YouTube and Facebook?
cool concept, but you really should make the distinction between actual countries and overseas territories. Additionally, some overseas territories have been included while others that are closer have been omitted.
I got Bermuda because I couldn't think of anything else that would be that close to the Caribbean and to Canada, and because it is specifically described as a "place" rather than a country. However, I never thought to guess anything other than sovereign nations for the rest of the quiz, since there were no caveats in the description and that is generally the assumption on Jetpunk. Fix the description and this is a great quiz!
I think you should include a note that some of the countries are constituent countries rather than sovereign. Or maybe you just like arguing with people in the comments...
Also, why not include France. as Guadeloupe and Martinique are both fully integrated portions of territory of that country?
Fair point (and I say this to several posters saying the same thing); although we generally indicate in our quizzes that Countries 197 to 205 feature in the answers, doing that here would point to the areas where the mystery place had to be.
Also it is true that Netherlands (at Saba) and France (at St Pierre and Miquelon) would qualify as answers if we included areas outside of European France and Netherlands. In our Countries Closest quizzes in general we do that. It's a bit of a surprise to us that that the nearest French point is at St Pierre and Miquelon and not Guadeloupe, but it's true!
#2 is also good. It avoids the problem rather than fixing it, but definitely a good idea to choose somewhere away from controversy :)
