Did you include Norfolk Island? It is a part of Australia(currently, though there has emerged in the last couple of years a popular independence movement), and is 1072 km from Auckland, and would be even closer to the tip of the North Island. Keep an eye on the independence movement. The natives are growing very restless. And jetpunk will have to rewrite all it's smallest country, newest country quizzes.
We didn't - that closest point is Lord Howe Island, in the Tasman Sea, which is a part of New South Wales. We've added an "excludes external territories" line to the instructions.
Niue ceased to be a territory of NZ, and adopted self-rule, in 1974. When I, a NZ passport holder, travelled there in 2016, we had to clear customs in Auckland as we left on the direct flight to Niue, and had to clear customs as we arrived in Niue, complete with an entry stamp allowing us to stay for 30 days only, employment prohibited. See the Government of Niue website for more information.
Kahikatea has added: Niue and the Cook Islands are every bit as independent as Palau and the Marshall Islands. Niue and the Cook Islands are 'independent countries in free association with New Zealand', and Palau and the Marshall Islands are 'independent countries in free association with the USA'
Tokelau is a dependent territory of NZ. It has twice held referendums, in 2006 and 2007, on whether to become self-governing in free association with New Zealand (like Niue and Cook Islands are), but each time the proposal was defeated.
Niue and Cook Islands should not be on this list, since they are not independent. If they were they should be added on the world countries quiz as well ...
See answer to Nathaniel2002 just above, and also the instructions to this quiz. Adding Niue and Cook Islands to the Countries of the World quiz would be an excellent idea.

I think Japan is missing from this quiz. The distance between Cape Reinga and Minamitori Island is 6819 km. The co-ordinates I used to calculate this were 24.28, 153.98 (Minamitori) and -34.42, 172.68 (Cape Reinga)
in the same way that Niue and the Cook Islands are here in red couldn't you do a similar thing for New Caledonia/France which ever one you want to call it because it is defiantly close to NZ . other than that good quiz.
