98 km/61 mi to Western Sahara, and 307 km/191 mi to the Saharawi ADR line of control. Morocco invaded Western Sahara in 1975, and current control of the country is divided like this. We (differently from this website’s editorial policy for featured quizzes) recognise Western Sahara as a country, and it appears in the Countries 197 to 205 quiz. Western Sahara/Saharawi ADR is recognised by 44 countries, and the Moroccan occupation by none.
Not a fully recognized nation and was recently annexed by Morocco. The ratio from recognized to non-recognized of Western Sahara is 41% recognized out of 193 UN members.
As pointed out above, the annexation has not been recognised by any country. In any case, although it occupies most of the country, about a fifth of its land area remains unoccupied.
If you include Western Sahara as a nation (recognized by about 40 countries) then Yes - see reply to Roger77024 above. Mauritania is already listed. The nearest Spanish location to these two is the Canary Islands..
Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish cities since 1640 and 1497 respectively. They're in the African continent, like the Canary Islands, and border Morocco, so distance is 0km. Both are autonomous cities which have the same rights as the other 17 autonomous regions.
There are two things I just don't get: 1) Spain and the Netherlands are on the Continent, while Ireland is an Island off to the northwest of Spain. How could Ireland be closer to Spain than the Netherlands? and: 2) Vatican City is IN Italy. If Italy is 334 Km from
Spain, how can the Vatican be 719 km away from Spain?

I agree with undeadwarrior. Even if you forgot about the Channel Islands, Lizard point in Cornwall looks on the map to be much closer than anywhere in Ireland and Jersey most certainly is, surely?
You'll see the UK appear as an answer anyway here, but to answer your question, the closest point in the UK is St Agnes, in the Scilly Isles, 686km/426 miles away. We would have listed the UK as at this distance, but Dan has made the call to count Gibraltar as a part of the UK, so the UK appears in this quiz as 0 km away. Generally in our quizzes we work from the legal standpoint that British Overseas Territories such as Gibraltar, Akrotiri & Dhekelia, Cayman Islands, etc, do not form a part of the UK, even though they are subject to its jurisdiction. That is why this quiz, and the unfeatured one minute sprint version of this quiz, have the same 20 answers, but with different distances showing for the UK.
I believe the Netherlands is near 945 km, I wonder how many countries score between that one and Ireland with 860km. Closest I could find was just below 943km from south of Maastricht to north of Figueres.
:) For those of you who don't know what country you'll end up in if you drill a hole through the earth from Auckland, maybe Alex's comment will give you a hint... I did take a trip to the exact spot that's underneath Auckland (it's hilly olive-growing country) and spent a couple of nights in the nearest town, Olvera.
I filled most of them... and then I got stuck with four empty countries... which were the small micro countries than never pop into one's mind: Andora, Monaco, etc...

Or, rather, it simply recognises the whole thing as the one country of Morocco?
:)
:)
how is that possible
Spain, how can the Vatican be 719 km away from Spain?
Yes, you heard that right. I forgot France
Because UK Is Further Away Than Ireland From Spain?
