America is the second-largest landmass on Earth. It could be a giant continent, and as far as Latin Americans are concerned, it is one. Which are the nearest countries to the single landmass of America? Countries that have part of their territory on America's landmass do not count.
Excludes uninhabited offshore islands and overseas territories
It's actually called Sint Maarten, and some variations on that are accepted, but not St Martin, which is the name of the French collectivity that borders Sint Maarten to the north. Iceland's been fixed, thanks.
Argentinian quiztakers may have a different view! There are several British Overseas Territories within range (Falklands, Anguilla, Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands), and they don't appear for the UK because BOTs, while being subject to the United Kingdom, do not form part of it.
ok I don't know which interpretation is more correct but this way it seems to me that you're treating Overseas Territories like they don't exist as far as this quiz is concerned, so maybe you could write 'excludes uninhabited offshore islands and overseas territories' or something like that?
Exactly! They are part of the Kingdom, as you say - and the Kingdom is not the Country. The Country of the Netherlands, and Aruba, and Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are four countries that sit alongside each other, none above the other. The Kingdom of the Netherlands is a supranational entity. Are you saying that the Kingdom is the country, and the four countries are, well, not countries despite being called countries? I guess that's one point of view! It'll keep the ongoing debate interesting :)
Hey Jerry, you should have Denmark accepted for Greenland, since some or many people like me say Denmark instead of greenland since we count Denmark as the actual country that possesses the islands. Thank you! (if you didnt accept this, i hate you! jk)
The country of Denmark and the country of Faroe Islands and the country of Greenland combine to make the Kingdom of Denmark. A bit like New Zealand and Australia and Canada and United Kingdom all combine to be part of British Commonweath (they all have the same ruler, Elizabeth II). Have added Denmark as a type-in for you, though.
Excellent quiz, as usual. Since you've accepted Bonaire (Netherlands), perhaps you could also accept Saba and Statia [Sint Eustatius] which are also an integral part of the Netherlands, with the same status as Bonaire
As you say, Netherlands consists of Bonaire, Saba, Sint Eustatius and of course the "main" Netherlands, in Europe. The closest point that the Netherlands comes to America is at Bonaire, which is how Netherlands gets onto this list. Although we "accept" all these places, only the one that is closest to America gets a listing.
Because Bonaire is a part not only of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but of the country of the Netherlands, which is one of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom (alongside Sint Maarten, Curaçao and Aruba).
but wait... The Kingdom of the Netherlands, commonly known as simply the Netherlands, is a sovereign state and constitutional monarchy with 98% of its territory and population in Western Europe and with several small West Indian island territories in the Caribbean. - Wikipedia
I think Falkland Islands can make it in the list
I'd be curious to see a similar one which excludes Caribbean countries but it might be a pain to work out!
