Countries appear here because they are close to the UK and the following territories: Akrotiri & Dhekelia (on Cyprus), Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Jersey, Montserrat, and Turks & Caicos Islands.
Interesting that you include British overseas territories, but not other countries'. US Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands are really close to each other. Another quiz idea?
I included Pitcairn, in fact all 14 British territories, and the closest countries are all closest to either UK proper or the six territories listed above.
This is a tough one! I enjoyed it because it really made me think, and I learned something new. It is definitely the toughest "closest countries" quiz I have taken on the site. Thank you!
Holland is not the Netherlands and should not be substituted for the Netherlands. Holland is IN the Netherlands. It would be akin to substituting New York for the USA, or London for the UK. By the way, I really enjoyed this quiz. Thank you!
We treat Faroe Islands as an independent country (it's one of the three constituent countries of the Danish Realm); but in any case the distance from the Shetlands to the Faroes is 291 km / 181 miles.
How does the USA not appear here? The British Virgin Islands (and Anguilla) and the US Virgin Islands are literally right next to each and certainly closer to each other than Cuba or Jamaica.
So you count the military bases in cyprus? Why? Those shouldn’t count. Also how far is Mauritius from British Indian Ocean territory cuz I thot they were pretty close
Akrotiri and Dhekelia count, not because they contain military bases, but because they are British Overseas Territories. When I travelled to Cyprus in 2019, I found the borders between Republic of Cyprus, and Akrotiri and Dhekelia, unmarked. Driving the roads that crossed that border, you'd never know you'd crossed from one jurisdiction to another.
