By the stats so far, it seems mostly us hard core geography nerds have played. Had trouble with Ivory Coast (as I have always used) yet had plenty of time to come back and work it out, maybe now I will be able to spell it correctly!
Yes they are, which is why they are both accepted as type-ins here. (See the instructions). On my own quizzes I use Cabo Verde and Timor-Leste as much as possible because, as you say, these are the official names, but this quiz has been set to reflect the Countries of the World quiz where Cape Verde (an interesting mix of two languages there) and East Timor are used.
I know about the directions, and I didn't miss these two. I just thought that I'd throw that out there. Thanks for your feedback. Keep the quizzes coming. Your's are, by far, the best!
That's the US's full name, just as United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Peoples' Republic of China, both are. What we are testing here is whether you can accurately spell the shorter, conversational names of countries, as they appear in the Countries of the World quiz.
"Democratic Republic of the Congo" still fills in both Congos, as in the sloppy spelling Countries of the World quiz. They are two separate countries with similar names. The "Republic of the Congo" has UN short name "Congo." The DRC does not have a conventional shortening. Especially on this quiz, people should have to differentiate between the two countries. Typing "Sudan" doesn't get you credit for two counties, neither does "Korea" or "Guinea."
It always makes me wonder why we don´t call these countries "East Congo" and "West Congo" or something similar in common language. Similarly to PRK and DPRK, etc.
Time to start using Czechia. It's in line with the guideline to call a country by the name it wants to be called by. The Czech Republic is the full long form political name, and Czechia is the official short form as recognized by the Czech government and all UN bodies.
Here's a good website laying out the arguments for Czechia in normal usage http://www.go-czechia.com/
What makes the Czech Republic so special? - Jet Punk insists on using Ivory Coast for Cote D'ivoire, East Timor for Timor L'este, Cape Verde for Cabo Verde and Suriname for Surinam, so why insist on Czechia for Czech Republic?
Great quiz, thanks.
