Sugarcane requires a wet tropical client. So these all make sense except... Australia! Not a very wet place for the most part.

It's a huge country, some parts in the north are totally tropical.

So what do you think Egypt sounds like? Finally got them all. Not so on tea and bananas.

Australia even has tropical rainforest and temperate rainforest. With tree kangaroos. Don't know if they eat sugarcane though...

This is a great song about Australia that even mentions the sugar cane fields. You might need to come for a visit and check the place out. Put it on your bucket list...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML9h3I5Uktw

Australia was one of the first ones I thought of! Queensland is pure sugarcane country.

Tropical Northern Queensland is full of sugar cane fields. They are absolutely everywhere!

Australia is a big place, we only have one portion of one state producing sugar cane but that still equates to a fairly large amount!

Besides Queensland which I think you are referring to Blizzrd33 there are acres of sugar cane in northern NSW as well.

I was just driving along the road near Murwillumbah in northern NSW the other day and had to pull over to snap a photo of the beautiful view of Mt Warning towering over the expanse of cane fields.

It does if you've been there! It was a (bad) idea by Nasser, who apparently thought that Egypt could become rich by massive irrigation from the Nile and growing only sugarcane. As a result, they have massive water shortages, and one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world (10th in 2019 - far ahead of the US).

Can't believe that Jamaica and Barbados, two of the greatest exporters of Rum aren't included here.

The greater mystery is the absence of Dominican Republic --- 2nd largest exporter of rum after the US. Cuba is the third largest exporter of rum. Jamaica and Barbados are 5th and 6th

I assumed Dominican Republic as well.

The DR is a fair way off the pace at 565,000 tonnes, which sounds a lot but is less than a tenth of the 20th ranked country.

I was also surprised that the only Caribbean entry was in 20th place in the quiz. A couple of hundred years ago they would have featured more prominently.

I'm too lazy to actually analyze the data, but I would assume that they are pretty large producers per capita (or by land area), but the Caribbean nations are pretty small, especially when compared to Brazil, China, India, Australia, etc.

The sugar cane is planted in the coast, very far from the forest

Fun fact: after losing all its colonies in the Americas, Spain lost its main source of sugar and therefore a lot of sugarcane started being planted along the coasts of Malaga and Granada (which have an almost tropical climate). Today, my hometown Frigiliana has the last remaining factory of molasses made from refined sugarcane in all of Europe.

The only reason I got Pakistan was because sugar cane juice is their national juice
