By the articles, I can't tell. Should we have "Czech Republic" visible but Czechia acceptable (like Quizmaster did CotW) or vice versa? Either way, both names should be acceptable.
I just followed QM, cause I wasn't really sure. Still waiting approval...
I'm making the answer name Czechia, with Czech Republic (still the official full name) a type-in. Since our quizzes are oriented towards short form names (eg Mexico, United States, France) then Czechia aligns with that principle.
Hello, Jerry. Unfortunately, I have to agree with the complainers. I've played jetpunk for years and czechia would never have crossed my mind. Sorry, one star for this quiz.
wow... first of all even if you were right I dont see that as a reason to one star it.
But the saying you ve played jetpunk for years doesnt not help your argument actually. That s like saying, I am much older than you, it is NOT called russia, it is USSR I know, becuase I have learned it many years before you did.
just because you arent aware of recent changes and things do not cross your mind, does not mean you are right and it definitely does not make this a bad quiz.
Well, Sifhraven, I consider your argument pretty childishly exaggerated and incorrect. Czechia has never been the official name of the country called Czech Republic. Therefore, I don’t think it should be part of such a quiz. Yes, United Kingdom is not the official name of the country, however, it is widely accepted even on the highest diplomatical levels, and that is the difference. Also, the argument that Czechia works as a type-in does not mean anything at all. Federate States of Micronesia can be typed-in by "fsm", that does not mean it is its official name and therefore can be used in a quiz called, let’s say, Countries whose names only consist of consonants. Therefore, I consider this a not-so-great quiz because of this flaw.
OK folks, it's time for some facts. In 2013, Czech president Miloš Zeman recommended the wider official use of Czechia, and on 14 April 2016, the government agreed to make Czechia the official short name. The new name was approved by the Czech cabinet on 2 May 2016 and registered on 5 July 2016. In November 2016 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented recommendations on how to use the short name "Czechia" in international contexts. The new short name was published in the United Nations UNTERM and UNGEGN country name databases on 17 May 2016. In September 2016, the British Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (PCGN) recommended the use of Czechia and added it as the sole form of the country name to their list of country names. On 26 September 2016, the International Organization for Standardization included the short name Czechia in the official ISO 3166 country codes list.
And while that's correct, a simple glance at the "incorrect" rate would tell you that there is a failing in this quiz. Any teacher worth their salt would know that if 80% of the students miss a certain question on a test, it wasn't because the children didn't learn it, it's because it wasn't taught. Not your job to teach anyone anything by far as quizmaster, but a revision would certainly be in order to indicate the right direction of thought. Perhaps, as listed above, put Czech Republic in grey, but still require the taker to type in "Czechia". That way it guides the user's thought process but doesn't give them the answer if they've remained in the dark.
That all being said, Czechia is not the official name of the country just as the way USA is not the official name of the United States of America, or UAB is not United Arab Emirates. Across Jetpunk, the shortened are accepted as "alternate" answers, but they themselves are not the correct answer.
France is not a country either, the official name is "The French Republic". This doesn't stop everyone from correctly naming the country France in the same quiz you mention.
It's just a matter of habituation. In german, we use the short term "Tschechien" since always, so the newer english short form is far more familiar then the weird "Czech Republic" thingy.
