Palestine is recognised as a country by 134 countries, about 70% of the world's total (compared with recognition by only 22 countries for Taiwan, which is generally agreed to be a country). Palestine is also recognised by the United Nations itself, with status the same as Vatican City's, and also Switzerland's until 1992. For its borders and other information see State of Palestine. Its occupation by Israel of much of the West Bank does not affect Palestine's status as a country, in the same way as the occupation of parts of Georgia and Cyprus by foreign powers do not affect theirs.
