Fun quiz. Can't believe the ones I got and the ones I missed. Missed Luna and Xeno Lovegood, but got Fang and The Fat Lady. I was really surprised that Buckbeak was mentioned that many times.
I missed some that I knew, and I missed some that I knew the character I wanted, just couldn't remember the first name (Mrs Dursley & Mrs Malfoy as 2 examples). Kreacher I just couldn't remember. I guess "that elf from Sirius' house" wouldn't work? Haha. Fun quiz.
Quizzes like this? On the front page? I can't think of any other than those two.
This seems appropriate to me because of the many similarities. Overlong, overrated tomes. Elaborate works of fiction with many pages and many characters but questionable literary merit; but nonetheless legion of enthusiastic fans. And I sort of wonder if in 2000 years or so they'll be similarly regarded by history. ...either because of Potter's growing significance, or the Bible's diminishing relevance and drift toward the realm of mythology, I intentionally left the comment open for interpretation.
@kal: You should maybe edit your original comment. Took me a while to realize you made a typo, since you rarely do. The comment didn't "make since" to me me at first. ;) Great parallels between Harry Potter and the Bible, though!
The last one I got was #7 on the list. Couldn't figure out who I was missing that was that high. I wonder if this list used every reference to him, or only when they actually used his name...
Merope came in with a whopping 32 references by name, which is one more than Nicholas Flamel and Mary Cattermole, but two less than Antonin Dolohov and Ernie Prang.
I wonder if this is only looking at actual names being used. I imagine if "Voldamort's mother" or "Voldamort's snake" counted as being mentioned, then both of those characters would would beat out Morfin or Bob Ogden. But, nevertheless, it was a lot of fun. I can't believe some of the ones that I missed. Thanks Quizmaster.
He was featured prominently in at least the first book, if not also the second. And then when Trelawney got sacked, he took over divination in year 5 and I believe stayed on longer but without much mention. Because Trelawney was fired but was not required to leave the grounds. Can't remember if she was reinstated after Umbridge was ousted
It says last names wont give all the answers but it accepts 'Dumbledore' for Albus Dumbledore and Aberforth is mentioned. Thus 'Dumbledore' shouldn't be an answer. It should be Albus and Aberforth as their own anwers.
I just started watching the Harry Potter movies. I've seen the first three films so far (I've actually seen those before though). Maybe I'll do better after I'm done with all of them.
well that sounds like an argument not to read the books. Dozens of names that dont really have impact on the plot. More names is not allways better. Especially when names are thrown left and right without a decent background story and later suddenly it is about "name" and you think who of the many names I ve read was that again. I have had that happen often, in many books.
I've read the books 5+ times and watched the movies 2-3 times, and in my opinion the books are better. I read the books before I watched the movies, and the stuff they left out really surprised me. I understand that they're on a budget and have to get to things quickly, but it was still surprising. I highly recommend the books, and the movies are still great nonetheless. It's an awesome, well-developed series :)
I thought I did quite well with 51 (even if I somehow managed to miss Draco, thinking I'd already got him), but turns out that only just gets me out of the lowest tercile. Clearly the bulk of people taking this quiz are more than casual readers of the series.
Not sure how I remembered Cormac McLaggen and Amos Diggory but forgot Lockhart and Kinglsey!? Also I put in 'Black' legitimately thinking of Phineas...oh well
I believe it is because typing in "Bob," a common, random English name, works for Ogden. People taking the quiz probably were just messing around and typing a random name and got him, despite having no clue who he is. It's still amusing, however!
She was technically only mentioned after book 4 or 5 when Voldemort returned to physical form of his own. Though Fantastic Beasts will have us believe that she's been around longer than Voldemort...
Nicholas as in Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington should work. I didn't think of typing in Nearly Headless Nick - I went for the first full name of his name.
So are any of the Geography quizzes on the front page. I couldn't hit half of THOSE answers, but HP is known enough worldwide that I could answer almost all of these.
During Fleur and Bill's marriage he was there and talked to Harry (disguised as a red-headed so-called "Weasley") about growing up with Dumbledore at Hogwarts and essentially their life story together. He also wrote an obituary in the Daily Prophet that Harry reads.
While Marge wasn't actively present in the series very much, she was mentioned a few times by Harry when he was thinking about his summers at the Dursley's. You also have to think about the scolding he got for breaking the Statute of Secrecy, which a few people talked to him about. It does seem very strange that she was mentioned more than the Fat Lady, Madam Rosemerta and Ms. Norris.
Having read Harry Potter on a different language made this quiz much harder than expected. I couldnt remember the name Crookshanks in english for my life. And Dudleys father is Vernon?! I know him as Walter Dursdley! So weird
When a character was mentioned using polyjuice potion, do you count it as the character portrayed, the actual character, or whatever shows up in the book? (e.g.-Barty Crouch Jr. posing as Alastor Moody in Goblet of Fire)
How is Hagrid mentioned more than Snape?? Also, 'Crab' is a type-in for Crabbe, which is a little weird. I can't believe I remembered Elphias but forgot Krum and Fudge...
If the instructions specify that "inanimate objects" aren't included, shouldn't that include the Fat Lady, who was just a painting (that talked)? She wasn't a pet or ghost as far as I remember from the lore...just a painting.
36/100, was always one of those franchises that I wanted to get into but kind of just read or watched occasionally, didn't read all of them and it's been a minute since I watched most of the movies but I started rewatching them recently. What's funny is that I sometimes forget high ones like Lupin but then I got Phineas Black, I apparently got Bob Ogden one time probably because I just randomly guessed the name Bob as a joke

Mrs. Norris = 59 (which would put her at #102)
Rowena Ravenclaw = 28
Helga Hufflepuff = 14
Bloody Baron = 24
But then again, she is only known as "Voldy's snake pet" for a long time.
I feel sorry for the person who had to count all this
