I thought that the UK government decided to boycott the games but several athletes went regardless under a white flag... I may be wrong

I really love that Japan boycotted. It's all about money. Thank you, America, for all the money. You want us to boycott some Olympics? Sure!

It was because of Afghanistan right?

Yes, because of it. Fun fact, that Afghanistan itself didn't boycott 1980 Olympic games.

You are slightly mistaken in your judgment, considering that the fact that Afghanistan did not boycott the games is funny. In the West, many have the misconception that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a war of the USSR against Afghanistan, no, it was a war of the USSR and Afghanistan against the Mujahideen. In addition, if we omit the fact that the government in Afghanistan was overthrown (rather pro-Soviet) and replaced with a more pro-Soviet one, then it was more likely an intervention in general.
