I'm surprised not to see anything about Bagan here, especially since it's in the photo. Something about the last Mughal emperor being exiled/buried in Yangon might be a good question too.
For a long time, they used to essentially be territories of the US. IIRC, they were "given independence" from the US in the early 90s, so it's likely he thought (and not unreasonably) that it's still used officially there
I don't know about now, but for at least fifteen years after the change, saying/writing Myanmar implied acceptance of the military regime; saying/writing Burma implied rejection.
It comes from the international system of units, in french "Système International", thus SI (it was adopted in France). I do agree that this type-in is a bit funny and short though^^
