Not that anyone would bother going this far, but I often hear South African rugby commentators calling their nation team the 'Blitzbokke', so maybe you could accept that as well? I just like to be able to put more interesting answers in to spice up the whole process.
I agree, does not need to be a hint for the rugby question. After years of international exile because of racial policies, South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup at home. Then-president Nelson Mandela famously wore the national jersey (which for some symbolised apartheid) as South Africa prepared to play the NZ Allblacks in the final. Symbolically, he was saying to forgive past grievances and come together as one to win, which, unfortunately for myself as a Kiwi, had the desired effect, South Africa winning in extra time.
Could some spelling mistakes be accepted for Xhosa? Guessed Xosa and Xosha before giving up on this. Also moved on after guessing springbok. but didn't think of adding the s
I agree, can Springbok also be accepted as an answer. Also, Afrikaner as an accepted answer for decendants of the Dutch. Boer technically refers only to the farmers.
100% in about a minute. but i suppose i do live here. it actually made me feel kinda dirty it was that easy. like i was cheating. but i consoled myself that it makes up for all the NFL quizzes where i dont have a clue whats going on
Why feel bad about that? It's a great advantage if you already know all these facts! It shows that you know very much about your home country (even if they're just basic facts). Concerning the NFL quizzes, I never take them either. I live in Switzerland and hence have absolutely no clue about american football (and also no interest in it. I am much more into soccer :))
Blitzed through them until I got to the diamond trading company, still got it in the end, then finished it off easily. Great Quiz, easy for a South African like me :)
I got 22 out of the 28 questions(should've been 23, but I misspelled Springboks and did not want to cheat - it's no fun cheating) and I'm not South African. But I'm visiting SA next January and I'm sooooo excited about it. Really looking forward to it.
I'd go with common knowledge, presidents and politics being in the news often and the dutch tribe being historically prominent. Also never underestimate the number of quizzes done beofre by jetpunk members.
A lot of these answers were featured in other quizzes scattered around the site, like General Knowledge quizzes, which helped me remember most of these.
Not all of them would have been farmers when they settled in the Cape, some of them were French Huguenot refugees fleeing religious persecution in France. Some would have been soldiers and traders. I do not understand why Afrikaner is not accepted as an answer. It is correct (and potentially more correct than Boer, which is more like a nickname, but one that gained currency due to the propensity of Afrikaners to engage in farming).
Yes I agree, "Afrikaners" is more correct than "Boers". Boers is not quite right, as the Cape was first a trading post with limited land-holding. They became known as Boers later, when they moved inland, especially to escape the British.
Hey guys I just made my first quiz “guess the ethnicity #1” I just really want people to see it and hopefully it will be nominated! Go ahead and check it out!
Please accept "afrikaners" as well as boers! Afrikaans-speaking people of dutch descent are considered afrikaners, and "boers" primarily refers to farmers.
Hi, South African here. I would say that "Boer" is not really as commonly used here anymore in this era. I notice foreigners use the word often, and while it was the historically used term here, it is not used quite as often anymore. Not never but just not as often. More people now would use "Afrikaners" or just "Afrikaans" for the "descendants of the Dutch" description more often than "Boer".
And before anyone else from SA asks, no I'm not Afrikaans or even white myself, just something I noted.
Surely more are in order?
(I live here though);)

Otherwise, good quiz :)
