Can you identify all the coloured islands in this World Map? The list consists of islands that fit at least one of the following:

A. A >= 5k or largest lake island in the world

B. A >= 0.5k and #C = 0.4k and #C = 250 and #C = 1, not fluvial/lake

D. Part of country name or A >= 10 and #C = 1, not fluvial/lake/coastal

E. Contains capital/largest city/largest island of an otherwise missing island country

F. Pop >= 400k, not fluvial/lake/coastal (coastal included only if A>= 150 or A >= 75 and pop >= 1M; fluvial/lake included if pop >= 2M)

G. Maximum altitude >= 2,000 m, not fluvial/lake

H. Isolated islands (see notes)

I. Islands with at least 10 terrestrial endemic species

Islands are coloured with the same background with which the first criterion they meet is written.

Islands up to 200 square km have a ring around them that disappears when you guess them. Some category F coastal islands larger than 200 square km but smaller than 800 square km have a smaller ring.

Notes:

-a is the area in square km (k = 1,000); #C is the rank in area within a country

- under C you are shown the flags of the countries the island belongs to

- the list of countries is taken for the list of 2-letter codes

- an island is considered 'coastal' if it's within 5-10 km of mainland

- in sections B, C and D an extra island with A >= 100 can be assigned to a country by not counting shared islands and islands that have the same name as the country

- area is in bold if the island is the largest of its country

- an island is considered isolated if:

1) it's isolated by at least 800 km

2) it has isolation index >= 61 and A >= k

3) it has isolation index >= 61 and out of the following 4:

a) A >= 0.4k

b) island distance >= 400 km

c) group distance >= 850 km

d) continent distance >= 1.800 km

a) and another are true; b) and another are true; c) and d) are true and A >= 15 and island distance >= 200 km

Note that in a few occasions a group of small islands is considered as one in the data, in such cases the largest island has been added

Guadeloupe is not an island. It is an archipelago.

Isnt it Ambrym, and not Ambryn? And why are some islands 0 sqmi?

It definitely is Ambrym. Would also be nice to have Manuang/Munuang accepted for Cheduba, Groote not need Eylandt when Island is otherwise unnecessary in every language, and some more circles on (especially) the grey-colored islands, since it is sometimes really really hard to tell if they are the background black/grey or the colored grey.

Other than that, I personally could do with about 300 islands instead of 400, but it's a great quiz. 400 is just too much for an hour.. though it's hardly your fault that we can't do 90 minutes.

Windows doesn't support flag emojis, so we just two letters. That's great for many countries, but smaller places often get stuck with a non-obvious code.

Super good job! Just a small note on the description:

Clause 3 under isolation notes says '3) it has isolation index >= 61 and out of the following 4:

a) A >= 0.4k

b) island distance >= 400 km

c) group distance >= 850 km

d) continent distance >= 1.800 km'

I believe the underlined section should be 'one of the following 4'.

BRAVO!!!! So I got 137, then actually hit "give up" because I have to be somewhere shortly - I think I might have been able to wrack my brain for a few more. There was a glitch or two (it didn't take the second island in almost every double named Island Country no matter how often I typed "Tobago" "Principe" "Barbuda" and the like. But after going through the notes and the qualifications, forget the minor glitches - this quiz is astonishing, and I commend the author on their unbelievable research. Staggeringly good quiz, who cares about a glitch or two! Bravo!

Fun to come across one countries island in the language of another country.

Groote Eylandt (Australia) is basically 'Big Island' in old Dutch. In modern Dutch it would be '(Het) Grote Eiland' (the Big Island' or '(Een) Groot Eiland' (A Big Island).

I like this quiz (though I certainly didn't do very well) and I like your attempt at capturing some criteria for "interesting" together. After all, we want to know the most "Interesting" islands and sometimes that corresponds with simple metrics, like size or population, but I like the use of multiple criteria to make this particular list.

The three least common that I got were Annobón, which I knew because it’s the only part of Equatorial Guinea that’s south of the Equator; Achill, which I know because I’m Irish; and Amsterdam, which I remembered because I thought it was really funny when I found it on my globe as a kid.
