I second this motion. A quick Google search shows that the entirety of South Georgia has around 30 inhabitants, well below your 10,000 criteria, and Grytviken has no permanent inhabitants.

I'm never quite convinced by these official name changes where the government does it in the face of strong opposition from the people who live there. I think Port Elizabeth is still "known as" PE far more than it is as Gqeberha.

Those extreme latitudes are tough. I was even trying random crap like "Arctic Station" and "North Pole Outpost" on the assumption that there was some research center with 12 people up there... but I missed "Arctic Bay"
