It's a typing skill contest! Be nice to be able to try these typing with one finger. What is the best that can be done without the timer? Can the 48 be done in less than 10?
I'm a slow typist, but got it withTennessee, Texas, South Dakota, Alaska. Hawaii, Iowa, Ohio, Oregon, Colorado, Georgia, Delaware, Maine, and Massachusetts - in that specific order. The procedural memory finally kicked in after constant repetition, and with only 1 second to spare.
Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, Georgia, Alabama, Colorado---- easiest to spell and only 14 you have to type, I did it with 5 seconds to spare after 5 tries with these states
I do not think that this quiz should be necessary for the 'Border Badge' as it is nothing to do with knowledge and all to do with typing. It gives professional / amateur typists an unfair advantage and is a case of using a given list of states to get through in time. This quiz should be part of the 'Typing Badge'.
I very much agree, this is not about knowledge but typing and strategy. And would fit better under another type of badge. I finished this quiz by working out a strategy, but I still couldnt tell you exactly where each state is...
Here's a tip: NEVER use New Hampshire! Never! You MUST do either New Hampshire or Maine in order to get Maine. Which one is shorter? And I highly recommend using Massachusetts. It's long, granted, but it gives you a bunch of other long ones, so it works. I tried Maine, Vermont, New York only to realize that didn't give me Rhode Island. Maine and Massachusetts is the way to go.
New hampshire and connecticut gives the exact same as maine and Massachusetts. I can type new hampshire and connecticut under 4 seconds (3.5 but more often 3.9). Maine is about 1.5 seconds. so that would leave 2.5 for Massachusetts .. I cant even type it in 2,5 mins, and probably not 2.5 hours... but even if i type something similar like masasusets it is not faster.
there is no point leaving new hampshire out whatsoever or putting masschusetts in, there are many reasons though for leaving it out ( your computer doesnt get thrown out of the window for one thing.., there wont be a divorce, all plates will stay whole, you dont need to get the cat down from the ceiling, etc)
I finally did it....the things I do for a badge. My strategy was to get in all the States with the shortest names, it's amazing how many they give you.
Gotten up to fifteen seconds left, here's how: Ohio, Iowa, Oregon, Georgia, Alaska, Hawaii, New York, Rhode Island or Connecticut--doesn't matter, both for RI, both have eleven letters, and it doesn't count spaces--Maine, Montana. Covers all of them, uses the shortest state names available with the highest impact relative to the time it takes to type them. Wouldn't work if CO and AZ weren't considered touching tho.
Very hard quiz. I had to find a strategy to get to complete it in 30 seconds. Here is how: Oregon, Colorado, Louisiana, South Dakota, Kentucky, New York, Connecticut, Maine, Georgia, Delaware, Louisiana, Alaska, Hawaii, Wisconsin.
There is definitely a better solution but this is what I found: Iowa (4) NewYork (7) Maine (5) RhodeIsland (11) Maryland (8) Kentucky (8) Georgia (7) Ohio(4) Arkansas (7) Utah(4) Oregon(6) Montana (7) Kansas (6) Alaska (6) Hawaii (6) Total: 96 characters
That's an interesting take on a timed typing quiz: the fewest keystrokes. All of the other "most efficient" solutions are focused on the fewest states. Very creative yet straightforward! You must be a programmer.
now here is my solution: Alaska Arkansas Nevada Colorado Connecticut Delaware Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Ohio Iowa Kentucky Maine Vermont Montana. Made it with 1 second left
It seems that the fewest states needed to cover the continent (not counting Alaska and Hawaii) is 10, and the solution is not unique. ie. Maine and Massachusetts will do the same as New Hampshire and Connecticut. But must every solution of 10 contain all of the following: Oregon, Colorado, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Georgia?
alaska hawaii idaho arizona south dakota wisconsin oklahoma missouri mississipi north carolina florida ohio maine massachusetts delaware - if you type these countries fast enough, you will have over 10 seconds left
I havent seen my solution yet so I'll post it. In no particular order: Oregon, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Connecticut, New hampshire, Colorado, Montana, Alaska and Hawaii.
It took it without strategy a while ago and I had 43. This time I decided I needed a strategy, it only took a few mins to come up with one, and got it on the first attempt.
everyone has different ways to memorize. Alphabetically, regionally. Feelingwise (like some feel lighter brighter, whatever) rhythm, endletter. but I saw you could make words with the starting letter WACK COMP(uter) HANG. (I didnt do it that way personally though I grouped em by feeling) Maybe this will help some people :)
This tests the ability to memorise a series of about 12 states and type them as fast as possible. It's not a test of knowledge, so I suggest that it's hardly worthy of this august quiz site.
This is not right. Why is this quiz on the border badge? This mostly tests out the typing speed. I mean, I think that this game is more about luck than skill, which is NOT right. >:(
This is a great quiz but seriously marred by the time element. I strongly agree with those above who recommend a further 15 seconds at least. Even after memorising the shortest alternative solution helpfully offered by many above, it still took me 16 attempts to get the lot, and even that was by typing and copying Massachusetts before I started and then pressing ctrl v . This reduces it to a mere speed typing exercise rather than any test of knowledge of the US States.
For those of us of a certain, ah, age...that did NOT grow up playing video games or spending all day texting on smart phones, AND never had a chance to learn "touch typing" {and even ignoring a personal issue with hereditary peripheral neuropathy}, .. this (and the related world quiz) are a virtual impossibility. Tried. Dozens of times. Best was 42. With a decent strategy, too (the body may be old, but I did get B.S. in Math at college in early 70's and the mind can still put my topology principles to good use). Thus, I join the chorus of badge-seekers who humbly beg for elimination or reduction in factors adverse to those with physical limitations. This should also include elimination of time constraints for those participating with audio assistance (due to blindness or other visual limits), those who can't use a traditional keyboard or use two hands to type. In reality, such ADA-like accommodations should affect only a small % of users and would help level the playing field. Thanks!
I was surprised about Massachusetts and Delaware but after a few hours of logic this was the solution I found. States are listed roughly in the order I worked out that they needed to be present.
16 states - Missouri, South Dakota, Utah, Ohio, North Carolina, Alaska, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Maryland, Washington, New York, Alabama, Iowa, California, Maine and Texas, with 8 seconds left.
Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Washington, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, Delaware, New York, Maine, Ohio, Missisipi, South Dakota, Rhode Island, Colorado, Texas.
Did it in 5 seconds with alaska, colorado, georgia, hawaii, kentucky, louisiana, new hampshire, oregon, pennsylvania, south dakota, rhode island, and wisconsin. Also, doing it in 11 states is not possible, I have proven it
I always do Nebraska, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, north Dakota,Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Rhode island, Virginia, Oklahoma, Georgia, Mississippi, maine, and new York LOL
It took multiple tries but I finally finished it with 2 seconds left. In the last 5 seconds I ha to spell Massachusetts correctly. My strat? (Not in any particular order). Hawaii, Alaska, Utah, South Dakota, Missouri, Texas, Oregon, Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maine.
1 second left, I used Maine, New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, California, Nebraska, Mississippi, Texas, Alaska, and Hawaii, 14 of them
YEEEEESSS!! My torture is finally over. My heart dropped when I had to do Pennsylvania since most of the time I type Lennsylvania but I still did it with 1 or 2 secs left!
to complete it do it in this order: iowa, missouri, utah, montana, oregon, alaska, hawaii, georgia texas, mississippi, michigan, maryland, new york, rhodeisland, maine, and the others i might have missed
Definitely not the quickest way, but I did: Idaho, Nebraska, Texas, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, Mississippi, California, Hawaii and Alaska with 4 seconds left
Again, the single complaint I have. 30 seconds is ridiculous. It is physically impossible for me to type that fast. When it's to get a badge it's even worse. Although I do have an idea,,,
Quite literally impossible. No matter what you run out of time — everyone’s lying about finishing, because I would have done so by now if they had. I’ve studied geography for 12 years and know exactly what states would work, but no matter what time runs out.
here it is
