Fir is not a species, it's a genus. And in Europe, christmas trees are often spruces, which are a different genus of the same family as firs.

Got crepe, eclair and pear as guesses for a breakfast food before I spotted the answer (as well as rice, ice, pie, and carp. I was getting desperate.)

I see no reason why “pie” is not accepted as a common breakfast food, especially around the holidays. Why are you poor saps eating cereal when there is PIE to be had??

If you eat too much pie, you can't drink as much cherry brandy, port, Galliano and spiced rum.

Small breakfast = very merry Christmas :-)

I was disappointed by this quiz as it was advertised as relating to Christmas. What's fireplace got to do with the Nativity story? The latter is about our Lord and Saviour taking human flesh and being born in a cold stable of a virgin in order to teach us the path to salvation and ultimately to redeem us from sin by His sacrificial death on a cross. The former concerns an irrelevant myth with no relationship to Christmas nor to truth.

Well, your story isn't very, um, "Christmas-y" now is it?

The quiz doesn't advertise itself as being about the nativity story

Not trying to be disrespectful, but it felt like you were describing a horror movie. Had I not known what you were talking about.

I agree, this shouldn't be advertised as a Christmas quiz to be honest. Also, it's 10 Lords A Leaping, not 11.

Yawn. Actually, in various versions over the years it's been 9, 10, 11 or 12 lords a leaping. Do some research and take your pick!

Why correct the song if you don't think this quiz should be advertised as a Christmas quiz? It was originally a forfeit game and does not have much to do with the birth of jesus.

Might want to substitute "replace" as the word "place" is in the clue, and also because it only leaves the "fi" to prefix it with to get the 9-letter word.
