Could "abolishes" work for "emancipates"?

No, the clue doesn't allow for that. 'Abolish' is a general term meaning 'put an end to'. So, while you can certainly abolish slavery, you can't abolish someone from slavery.

Ya, I tried that, but didn't really expect it to work for exactly that reason. emancipate is definitely more correct

One could certainly "put an end to" someone from slavery, but the clue doesn't allow for that! :D
