Who Sang These Songs: The Yacht Rock Music Subgenre Quiz
Yacht rock is a pejorative name for the mellow "adult rock" or West Coast sound of the seventies and eighties. The subgenre sets itself apart from other rock subgenres with its smooth jazz and funk rhythm influences, as well as with its clear vocals and attention to catchy melodies. Other key features include what is called the "doobiebounce" and fools losing at love. It can be as soft and vapid as its worst criticisms level at it, but at its best it can be surprisingly lyrically and musically sophisticated. There is still some argument about just who gets to live in the yacht rock boat, and who doesn't (or shouldn't have to). By all means, use the comments to argue about who you think should or shouldn't be in this quiz.
Name the artist or band who performed each group of songs listed in the hint.
Note: Not all bands on this quiz were strictly yacht rock, but all of the songs score over 50 on the Yachtski Scale.*
Yeah, that seems like a good candidate. I couldn't find it on the scale when I searched through it. The guys that coined the term actually have a scale you can check out. They are very clear about what they think is and isn't allowed in the yacht. Gotta be over 50 on the scale to count (though I sometimes question the rationale of the scale. Brandy didn't make the cut, and Love Will Keep Us Together barely made it, despite being performed by a guy called "The Captain" who performed in a yachting cap.)
