Russia and Belarus are banned
Before I start, I do not support Russia or Belarus in the situation involving the invasion. I am fully on Ukraine's side. Now to the olympic ban news. In a statement made on April 27, 2022, Russian sports minister Oleg Matystin has, "expressed hope the nation will not be banned from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the nation largely blocked from international sport due to the invasion of Ukraine." accoding to InsidetheGames.biz . Also, InsidetheGame.biz says, Paris's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has hinted at the possibility of her backing a ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing. So, it is up to Hidalgo and the president of France to decide. Ukrainian refugees have teamed up with Switzerland, and some Ukrainian athletes will compete with Switzerland. So there is hope for Ukraine to compete in Paris 2024. I'm FudgyOreo111, have a nice day.
I suppose there could be a "independant" athletic group. They could unite together and compete under a different title. Whether the Russian government would allow this is a different matter.
And yes, I know FIFA, the IOC, etc, are all European/Western organisations despite controlling international sports bodies, so they only care when the victims are also European or Western. Still, it feels pretty sad seeing such blatant form of inequality.
But who am I to speak, after all? I'm not from a relatively civilised, relatively European country ;)
1. This will violate, though the main, but forgotten since 1976, the principle of "sport outside politics".
2. This is unjustified xenophobia against Russian athletes, as well as the suspension of Yugoslavs and South Africans at the time.
3. If the IOC cares about human destinies, and not the isolation of Russia (which is unlikely), then it would dismiss the United States and Israel for the war in Syria, Turkey for the war against the Kurds, NATO countries for the war in Libya and Afghanistan, etc.
