Random Country Facts! #11

+3

Before we start, I'm sorry this is a day late... I had a busy day yesterday. Anyways, onto the facts!

Iraq

1. 5,500 years ago, in Mesopotamia, (modern Iraq) both the wheel and a ancient writing system was first used.

2. Mesopotamia was also home to some of the world's oldest civilization.

3. Iraq means fertile in Arabic.

4. Iraq's coastline is smaller than Saint Vincent and the Grenadine's coastline.

Ethiopia

1. Because they use a different calendar, the year is still 2016 in Ethiopia. They have 12 months with 30 days each and 1 extra month with 5 or 6 days.

2. The hottest and lowest region in Ethiopia is called the Danakil Depression.

3. Ethiopia is the origin of coffee beans.

4. Ethiopia has the most expensive internet in the world.

India

1. India produces the most movies a year in the world.

2. Despite being home to 1.4 billion people, around 20-30% of the Indian population is vegetarian. They have more vegetarians than the rest of the world combined. The reason why so many people don't eat meat is mostly because of religion.

3. There is a skeleton lake in the Himalayas where 300 people have died.

4. Just a few years ago in India, more people had access to a phone than to a toilet.

I will be back next Friday, (for real this time) see you then!

It’s fun reading this series every week! One correction, however: Mesopotamia isn’t a civilization. It’s a region that was home to several civilizations. The Sumerian civilization was the one that developed writing and the wheel.
