JetPunk Asks: What's On Your Playlist?

The Power of Memory

Back when I was a kid, I used to ride the school bus.  Every day, I sat in the back of the bus with the other kids, who ranged in age from elementary age to high school seniors.  Some of the girls wore jean skirts and had heavy perfume.  And the bus driver would play top 40 hits from the radio.  To this day, every time I hear "Heaven is a Place on Earth", I'm transported back to my youth.

Now, much older, I'm trying to take advantage of the effect of music on memory.  I love to find new songs to listen each year.  Listen to them enough, and the song will be permanently etched in my memory - tied to the people and experiences I remember from that year.  Help me find the ultimate 2022 playlist.  What are you listening to right now?

Comment below with some of your favorite songs and I'll add them to the list - and to my 2022 playlist!

Gasoline by I Prevail

One of Us is the Killer by The Dillinger Escape Plan

Doomsday by Architects

It always amazes me that Western people would only listen to English songs. Radio/TV would seldom play songs in any other languages (except the odd occasion of the Eurovision Song Contest). In contrast, many Asians would listen to music in other languages (Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, English, Spanish, French, Thai etc.), not necessarily understanding what the lyrics say.

P.S. Out of the songs above, Casimir Pulaski Day is my favourite. Thanks for the recommendations.

P.P.S. I also wrote a blog of my own playlist, but it's Cantopop only.

Brilliant blog! I have always found it fascinating how certain songs remain engraved in your mind, linked to specific events or periods.

I remember listening to poorly recorded tapes on my old walkman, especially Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar.

Then I remember buying my 1st CD -it was Linkin Park Meteora and it is nothing to say that I loved it! Then my collection did not stop growing, the musical genres diversified according to multiple encounters and feelings of a lifetime.

Here is a list of 10 songs I would recommend, among many that I love:

Eddie Vedder - Society

System of a Down - Chop Suey!

Pixies - Where is my mind?

The Beatles - Within You Without you

Renaud - Chanson pour Pierrot

The Fugees - Killing me Softly

Lana Del Rey - Venice Bitch

Joe Hisaishi - Mother of the Sea

Johnny Cash - Hurt

Ennio Morricone - Un Amico

That said, 100% agreed on the Joplin and Nirvana songs!

I'm mainly into pop, indie and Bollywood. Going through the comment sections of music-themed quizzes, I've noticed people complaining about all the songs they don't think deserve to be hits, many of which happen to be pop. Of all the songs you listed, I have only heard Cardigan and Harmony Hall (I like them both!). I think a Coldplay song (Fix You, Higher Power, Hymn for the Weekend, Paradise, Orphans) would be a great inclusion to your playlist. As for a lesser known band, I would most probably suggest an Indian band named Parikrama (their song But It Rained is my favourite). You should check them out! Some other songs that I would like to suggest:

Perfect and Galway Girl - Ed Sheeran

Golden - Harry Styles

Riptide - Vance Joy

Radioactive - Imagine Dragons

Roots - Imagine Dragons

Hard Times - Paramore

Non Believer - London Grammar

Royals - Lorde

Lost in Yesterday - Tame Impala

Somebody that I Used to Know - Gotye

I listen to lots of music while working, truck driving gives you that freedom that many other workers don't have.

I listen to anything and everything, if I like it I'll play it. But if I dont like it...well you get the idea.

I have music that ranges from South American PanPipes and South African Choirs all the way up to Swedish death metal and 70's punk rock. And lots of stuff in between.

The oldest song I have is from around 1910 if you dont include classical music by many composers. I listen to opera, jazz, folk, rock, pop, country..depends on my mood.

If I had to pick some artists for others to search out they would be....

RUNRIG - Scottish folk/rock band that sings in English and Gaelic.

The LACS - American rap/rock redneck band (think mud, trucks, and girls).

JUDY TZUKE - 1970s rock ballads

BOOZOO CHAVIS - Louisiana accordian player, mix of Cajun and Blues.

The POGUES - Irish folk/rock band

For something different...

LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBASA - S.African choir, very relaxing.

Songs by Rush (Some are quite long, feel free to not add):

-Tom Sawyer

-Xanadu

-Red Sector A

-2112

-Bastille Day

-Freewill

-Secret Touch

Songs by Ween (Warning: really weird):

-Ocean Man

-The Golden Eel

-Buckingham Green

-Mutilated Lips

-The Stallion pt. 3 -- DO NOT LISTEN TO PART 2

-The Grobe

-Dr. Rock

This leads into other experimental music:

-Судно (Sudno) by Молчат Дома (Molchat Doma)

-The Record Player Song by Daisy the Great

-Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads

And then I get sick of that and return to the much better hard rock:

-Slow Ride by Foghat

-Princes of the Universe by Queen

-Safari Song by Greta Van Fleet

-For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) by ACDC

And that leads me back into Rush, to restart the cycle.

My favorite Brazilian ones could be Djavan, Skank, or Jota Quest... it’s hard to think when the car with a hateful funk on 200 decibels pass on your house and shake it like an earthquake 😐. And I like the rhythm of the samba, although I don’t have a specific music. Maybe Aquarela do Brasil, but I don’t listen to it since ages lol. Actually I don’t like so much sertanejo, although somehow when I was a baby I used to dance Chora Me Liga from João Bosco e Vinícius with my uncle lol. I also used to dance the music of the Avenida Brasil novel. I really don’t know how I was so strange in the 3-year-olds... ;-;

The list is really what I would call a "general pick up" from Brazilian music. I tried to get different vibes from the 60s to 90s and limit it to 15 songs maximum. It's kinda hard to resume it in less than 50 songs when talking to someone from other country. There are lots of great vibes (I picked some pop rock, soul, samba, ska, MPB, samba-reggae and classical rock), and based on the ones I suggested I could suggest a lot more of "underground" artists similar to any of them.

Aquarela is a great song, but few artists could do good covers of it. My favourite ones are the Tom Jobim's instrumental version (from Tide, 1970) and Arcade Fire's cover in English (bonus track from Funeral, 2004).

If you are talking about Avenida Brasil's opening theme, the song is not Brazilian. It is a reggaeton from a duo from Puerto Rico and France. Latino covering it doesn't make it a Brazilian song lol. Sertanejo and funk are just not my style either.

Katzenjammer is a fantastic Oslo-based girl band. Their name is a German loan word meaning "cat's music", and is a derogatory term for low-grade music, especially jazz. One critic described their music as "teeter(ing) on the verge of unbridled chaos), and was forced to publicly apologize when the band soared to popularity in Norway.

They play instruments you've never heard of in a genre that defies definition on the way to creating some of the most innovative and compelling songs I've ever heard.

Demon Kitty Rag is my favorite of their songs, closely followed by A Bar in Amsterdam.
