Blog About Random Country #5 Brazil

+10

I'm sure that MG17 is smiling now...

Origin of the Name

The word "Brazil" likely comes from the Portuguese word for brazilwood, a tree that once grew plentifully along the Brazilian coast. In Portuguese, brazilwood is called pau-brasil, with the word brasil commonly given the etymology "red like an ember", formed from brasa ("ember") and the suffix -il (from -iculum or -ilium).

Flag

Flag of Brazil

The flag of Brazil has a green field with a yellow rhombus in the middle, and a blue disk in the center with 27 stars scattered throughout the disk and the country's motto depicted on a white band, sprawled across the blue disk. The green and yellow are inspired from the former imperial flag of Brazil, which was derived from two royal households: the green representing the House of Braganza, and the yellow for the House of Habsburg that his wife Maria Leopoldina came from. The blue disk and the stars are what make up the most fun part of this flag; each star represents one of the 27 states of Brazil. Furthermore, they are all separated into 9 different constellations that you can typically see in the Southern Hemisphere. Straddling across the blue disk is a banner with the country's motto "Ordem e Progresso", which means "Order and Progress".

History

Brazil is accidentally discovered by a Portuguese explorer on April 21, 1500 . A sailor named Pedro Alveras Cabral, who is trying to go to India , finds South America when he gets confused with the compass . Later, he seized the region that corresponds to the territory of today's Brazil for Portugal. In the next period, Spain seized the region and the region passed under Spanish rule. There are numerous wars between Portugal and Spain for the dominance of Brazil, and the region was constantly changed hands between the two countries, Brazil, which existed as a colonial state for a long time, is now governed by a federal republic .

(Note: History of Brazil is not that short but I am trying to write short because it would be boring if I write long. It is same for every blog in this series.)

Christopher Columbus: our hero, right?

Yet he was so stupid.

Him: I reached land! Let's immediately assume that I reached India and not some other landmass and call all the natives Indians even though there is a whole ocean separating them from India! But I wouldn't think that that could be true. I'm too busy being heroic.

Well, I'm still in doubt if you really got Brazil lol! About History, don't worry, because me and ZooTuber are planning a series with the depth study about the fascining Brazilian story, despite you could point other imporant parts, like the changing of capitals, the gold era (IN MINAS GERAIS!!!), and the independence. If you want to be technical, Lagoa dos Patos is a lagoon, that has exit to the sea, and the largest lake is Lagoa Mirim. The ironic, is that Mirim means "small" in tupi language. About the flag, you are wrong. The green represent the forests, and the yellow are the richness and the gold, while the blue circle is the sky of Rio de Janeiro (the capital when this flag was made) in the Proclamation of the Republic and each star is a state. The flag was really inspired in Brazil Empire flag. Also, at cuisine, you should add feijoada, which is basically the dish that translate Brazil, the cheese bread, açaí, tapioca, and the sweet and delicious brigadeiro.

Also, more curiosities:

Brazil is the most producer of coffee of the world

Rio de Janeiro already was capital of Portugal

You can reduce your penalty reading books. In a city at South of Minas Gerais (hahaha!) prisoners ride fixed bicycles, thus generating energy for the city. In this way, 3 days riding is equivalent to 1 day less stuck.

Brazil is the only country in the world where ethanol is offered at all gas stations. Just like over 90% of new cars use it as fuel.

Ilha da Queimada Grande, located on the coast of São Paulo, has a large number of snakes, thus having around 5 to charge per square meter. As well as, due to its dangerousness, the Navy prohibited the disembarkation in the place.

Macapá, is known as the capital of the middle of the world for being crossed by the Equator Line. The stadium Zerão was built so that the center line of the field coincides with the Equator.

The biggest cashew tree in the world is in Brazil.

The Pantanal in Mato Grosso is the largest floodplain on the planet. The flooded area, about 250 thousand square kilometers, is equivalent to the territory of the United Kingdom, so much so that during the flood season the rural population has to migrate to other cities and towns. It is also one of the places with the greatest biological diversity in the world: there are more species of fish in the Pantanal rivers than in the entire European continent.

With so many waters, Brazil is home to the largest hydrothermal resort in the world, in Caldas Novas, Goiás. Furthermore, the largest hydromineral resort in the world is also Brazilian, and is between the municipalities of Caxambu, and São Lourenço, Minas Gerais (yeah!)

The smallest municipality in area, and the smallest municipality in population of Brazil are located in Minas Gerais (XD)

The longest continuous sand strip in the world is in Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
