Chapter 1

"You're the seeker," I said to Ariel as I ran into the woods. "Count to fifty."

"Alright then," she yelled back. "One, two, three..."

As she counted, I sprinted deep into the heavy woods of Cavan. The Forests of Cavan was my home, my habitat. I grew up here for my entire life. My mother and father raised me here in this very forest. Ariel and I were on the southwest end of the forest and my cabin was about fifty meters away to the south. I knew how to navigate the southern parts of the forests, so I avoided going too deep.

But I'm treading in the forest, avoiding trees and branches, and it feels uncanny. I felt like I ran for about three minutes and I felt lost. Very lost. The paths were jumbled and the trees were longer and bigger. And the sun has fully set.

I looked over a boulder and saw mist blanketing the forest rapidly.

"Ariel?" I yelled. "Are you there?" Stupid plea. Of course she's not.

I decided to walk my way out, eventually I'll exit the forest. I decided to take another step forward and the ground under me was unstable. Very wet dirt. A screech raged from the forest and I jolted in fear. The mist grew larger and swallowed my vision. In my peripheral vision, the trees around me were growing taller and the leaves died. The air smelled terrible, like burning crayons.

I kept walking forward and the faint screech gradually amplified its volume. I don't know where it was coming from, but I could tell it was coming closer. Then my ears popped as the sound came next to me. It hurt more and more as I screamed in agony. I fell onto my knees and on the brink of collapse. I yelled, "Stop!" at the top of my lungs, then the screeching and mist eradicated at the second of my command.

I looked around and took my hands off of my ears. "What?" I muttered quietly.

"You poked your nose in something you weren't supposed to."

The voice hit me like a brick. It was quiet yet audible.

And now the surroundings were completely unidentifiable. In my vision, which was finally clear, the grass was normal, illuminated by the lunar light. The trees seemed normal, and so did the boulders, rocks, and... houses. Civilization. I heaved a huge sigh of relief. Perhaps now I can go back home. I came across an intersection between a small hut and a village in the distance. I decided to go to the hut and look outside from the window. There's no one inside. Useless, though it could make a good night's sleep.

I decided to head for the village. Lights were on and it seemed lively. My steps became larger and larger and as I was nearing the village, I could've sworn something came out from the shadows. I flinched, rubbed my eyes and realized that I'm hallucinating. No problem. I wiped the sweat from my brows and continued forward.

I entered the light of the village and it feels great. I saw people—normal people, and houses—normal houses. I stood from the corner of a house, observing the villagers. I took a deep breath, feeling a weird pressure on my shoulders. Why do I feel like this? The children leaped playfully through the streets with their mothers, street vendors were closing for the day, and in the midst of that, there was singing. I should be happy and crying. It fills me with so much memories.

Then I felt a sharp back pain. It was a definite misfit from the feelings I'm supposed to feel. I hurled down and coughed. Blood came out of my mouth, landing onto my hands. I tried to scream but I couldn't. The pain kept getting worse and worse. Something came out of my back, then came in again and again.

It's a dagger. I'm getting stabbed. The dagger twisted in my flesh and my knees twitched. A dying screech came out of my mouth, and yet no one could hear me. Hell, no one could see me. A hand dragged me into the shadow and continued to stab me, more and more.

Eventually, the stabbing stopped, but the burning pain didn't. My blurry version could see a hand wipe blood off my mouth.

"Miss, please leave."

Leave? You've done the job for me. My life has left this world and I'm mad. My thoughts aren't straight, nor is my breathing or heartbeat. I wanted to explore the world and do many things. I want to make my parents proud and be famous. All of my aspirations have gone down the drain with me.

I wheezed, and very faintly, I told my killer, "End it."

The last thing I saw was the knife towards my eyes before everything turned black.

Great story! Though maybe the killer could give (I don't think her name was revealed unless I'm stupid) a boop on the nose before the final stab? Sorry, my new favorite word is boop, and I like saying boop a lot now.

Boop.
