10/10 and cracked my top 20 😁 Couple that probably took me longer than they should have though, on the Canton one I probably would've got it wrong if Hong Kong had been an answer 😅
Chess is a game with millions of billions of different ways to play, there might be situations where a certain piece (may even be a pawn!) is more valuable than a piece that is generally considered valuable, like a rook. It all depends on the situation.
I still don't understand why rooks are considered higher value - both they and bishops can move as far as "they" want, as long as the spaces are open. And, since bishops move diagonally, they can be "sneakier," and slip in under the radar, since our brains are programmed to think up/down/left/right rather than diagonally. Maybe I'm just being crazy.. If anyone knows why rooks have the value they do, please post a comment.
Once you actually start to play chess stuff as simple as a piece just being where it is doesn’t generally go under your radar.
I believe rooks are worth more because easier checkmates like back rank, laddermate, and king and rook are possible with it. If you just have a king and a knight or a king and a bishop you can’t win, but with a rook it’s possible.
maybe doesn't really answer your question, but I think that chess theorists before computers thought that a rook is worth 5 pawns and bishops and knights are each worth 3 pawns, and then when we had computers that could evaluate this, the computers basically came to this same conclusion, so it is agreed upon.
But like was mentioned in another comment, a bishop is stuck to only being able to access half the board (either light squares or dark squares) but a rook can access all squares
Also, the discussion about how much a piece is worth would be between experienced chess players, and for them a bishop would not be sneaky because they are so used to visualizing how it moves and would not be surprised. Maybe in a game amongst beginners, a bishop actually would be more valuable if it's the case that it can be used as a sneaky piece
8/10 is a non-guess record for me I think. Obviously need to brush up on my rappers getting shot and hurricane names (I was so sure it was Ivan... haha)
Me on the hurricane: Not Helene. That JUST happened. Picks a different answer. Oh, yeah, it's 2024 now. LOL. Maybe I shouldn't do these in the morning. Only got 4 right.
Curious from our non-US people: did Helene and Milton really not make headlines?? Almost 300 people died collectively; this was a really big one. We've been hearing a lot about the flooding in Spain which is at 159 deaths right now. Just wondering why we hear more about huge natural disasters in other countries but some do not seem to hear about ours? Also bless those affected by the historic flooding in any part of the world as of late
