10/10 with no guesses, even with one question about flags and two about European geography, things I'm not good at--good thing I learned about Andalucia just the other day after missing it on another JP quiz.
Something more like "reminiscent of home". It's an interesting one though because the root for both meanings is the same Middle English word, which meant something like "plain; simple; unadorned" or "fit only for the home". So it's easy to see how it evolved to mean both things, but the "ugly" meaning has only survived in North America, and the more literal meaning elsewhere.
A mis click worked in my favour today! I thought Valencia was the capital of Andalucia, and accidentally clicked on Sevilla. Boy was I happy when I found out that I was accidentally right!
8/10. Never heard of the negative meaning of 'homely' as a New Zealand English speaker, 'generous' was my answer. Got the 200 species of bear question wrong too.
What does "homely" mean outside North America?
