"Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow. It is also a medication, often referred to as an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), used to treat anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Synthetic EPO, or recombinant human erythropoietin (rEPO), is also used by some athletes to enhance performance, a practice known as blood"
I had not heard of it. I think I heard that some would sleep in a hypobaric chamber, which would increase RBC count(?), then they'd withdraw the blood, and transfuse it in the future. I have no idea how true any of that is, or the other history of drug abuse in the sport. I guess data collection is so good now, that there is a large fan analysis of rider power output, which helps in spotting outliers.
I actually guessed it. And I'm a medical student for the record. I chose it because Nitroglycerin has a very rapid onset of action which I thought would have made more sense for races. EPO is much more of a chronic treatment, it takes weeks to act.
Fun fact: New Zealand’s Richard Pearse probably flew before the Wright Brothers. His own, strict definition of flight didn’t count either parties’ early achievements, so it seems he didn’t push for credit.
Fun fact about me: I cannot ride a bicycle, so 9/10 is much better than I was expecting to get when I realised the theme today 😅 Fell at the last hurdle though, which always stings. Never heard of EPO, and I could've sworn I'd heard of nitroglycerin being used as a PED for something
Every now and again a mate tries to teach me, but I am supremely uncoordinated 😅 Last time was during lockdown and he had me doing a nice circle to the left, but the first time I attempted to turn right I just tipped over 😂
Started out strong, but ultimately missed four. Didn't know the answers for 6, 7, 8, or 10, and guessed incorrectly on all of them. I clicked muay thai for 7 because I remembered Mortal Kombat's Liu Kang had a move by that name, but apparently it's not really a thing 😅
So close to perfection! But I guessed wrong on the drug had it down to a 50/50 chance.between the two acronyms. All others except old fashioned bike were instant for me. So a 9/10 today
This was a stroll ehm I mean bike-ride.. nr one on my leaderboard yay! Might have happened before, but I can't honestly remember it. Of course I got the sport question wrong (not the last one, it is sports but more of a news item, usually not great with that either, but at least this fact didn't involve dates or people)
