7/10 isn't bad, just really should have known the valet one and the algebra one never would have got the element one though. Which, by the way, is one of the hardest questions I have seen on this trivia
Ehh if you recognize francium, polonium and germanium, then you're set. They are close to the name of the country in English unlike say nihonium (Japan) and ruthenium (russia) which take from different languages.
I do think it's a bit tough to do process of elimination if you don't know any of them, but so are trivia questions pertaining to niche pop culture or narrow periods of history
I knew nothing of that figure, but interpolated by the theme (bulls appeared already) and got lucky thinking of popular hero of the peasants' revolt John Ball.
Look up old political cartoons, you are bound to come across him, he pops up very often. Very interesting to browse through I think :) some are very creative, with countries in shapes of people or animals.
Stockholm Syndrome is a myth. It has never been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), in the United States, and is not considered a real condition by any medical association in any developed nation.
When I was in college 1974, Patty Hearst, an heir of the wealthy Hearst family, was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army when she was 19 years old. She was is an example of the reality of the syndrome. She adopted their radical ideology, participated in a bank robbery. She was arrested in 1975 and the defense was the Stockholm syndrome. She spent a short time in prison and was subsequently pardoned. It is real.
I can thank Jeeves for getting Q8 right. Despite his name being synonymous with butlers the original Jeeves is a valet, although when necessary he says he can buttle with the best of them.
Butler is the co-head of house staff, making sure the cooks/maids, etc. are up to snuff. Footmen take care of the coaches - ride at the back of the coach and assists passengers getting in/out (probably cars now). They work more outside the house/castle/mansion but I think they might be in charge of polishing the silver & helping serve at table. The porter helps with getting things in/out of the above. Valets are assigned generally 1-1 with 'their' gentleman - lady's maids similarly. Two or three Downton Abbey episodes will catch you up! 😉
Yeah, murderous Bates is the valet and Carson is the butler. Jeeves is also a valet and not a butler. Same goes for Bunter.
I blame Agatha Christie, she had at least 30 butlers in her books but only one valet although valets must have been more numerous. You only had a butler if you had a big household, but a gentleman had to have a valet even if he lived in an apartment.
Once again my lack of interest in period dramas is my undoing 😅 Most of my experience with the idea of butlers comes from Batman's Alfred, who it turns out is more of a valet... 😅
Sadly the polonium thread is gone, but if you want to find a really long thread, go to the Pixar Movies Quiz and press the load all comments button at the bottom of the page. You'll find the 'Name the Date' thread
8/10...I knew & was decently fast on the 8, a complete guess on the math, I knew polonium/germanicum, wrong on the 50/50 decision. Typical performance.....
Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a fantasy novel series by American author Rick Riordan. It is the first of four book series in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, preceding The Heroes of Olympus, The Trials of Apollo, and The Nico di Angelo Adventures.[a] The novels are set in a world with the Greek gods in the 21st century. The series follows the protagonist, Percy Jackson, a young demigod who must prevent the Titans, led by Kronos, from destroying the world.
I'm British and I've heard of him. I think from history at school. UK was often depicted as John Bull in political cartoons in punch newspaper, same as Europe is depicted as a female Goddess riding (a bull?).
I figured I might have come across him in school, but I have no memory of it. Apparently he fell out of favour when WW1 happened, which is primarily what I remember learning about in GCSE history. I just remember Lord Kitchener wanting me.
8/10. Got Q5 and Q6 wrong. Never read any of the Percy Jackson books. Quite amazed how few got 'Valet' right. A butler is similar, but a bit different. More should have got John Bull right too.
Took it slow and got 10/10 :) maybe I should do that more often (obviously don't work on total guess questions). Still managed to get my 12th best score of 9837

Sadly I've never heard of John Bull before. Is he the British equivalent of Uncle Sam?
Gravity isn't in the DSM either.
