9/10, and yeah! A quiz that led me into a nice rabbit hole. Kosciuszko sure sounds like Poland....so how did a mountain in Australia get named after the very interesting person below who never went to Australia? This guy was pretty amazing....the mountain naming background is also interesting. Fun Fact: Highest public toilet in Australia is on the mountain
"Andrzej Tadeusz Bonaventura Kościuszko (1746-1817), more commonly known as Thaddeus Kościuszko, was a Polish general, military engineer, and revolutionary. He fought in the American Revolutionary War, as well as an uprising in his home country. He was known for his bravery, kindness, patriotism, likeability, and unwavering strength of character."
Mt. Kosciuszko was so named in honor of General Kosciuszko by Polish explorer Pawel Strzelecki. In 1840 he and another explorer, James Macarthur, discovered the two highest mountains in Australia. The mountains were close together. Strzelecki, using instruments, determined which mountain was higher and named it for its resemblance to Kosciuszko Mound in Krakow, Poland. (Wikipedia) I only got the answer right because it was on another Jetpunk quiz I took recently.
Sorry, I hate to be the complainer down here because jet punk really does mean a lot to me. But you can’t just make up mountains. Ruins the quiz and day for me. See everyone tomorrow.
9/10, comfortable on all of them except Discobolus, where I went the wrong way on a 50/50, but can at least take solace in having gone with the majority haha
You mean, The Hague, The Netherlands?
- Australian snakes
- Australian spiders
- Australian mountain pronunciations
Science is a bad subject for me.
