The Transglobe Expedition (1979–1982) was an expedition that circumnavigated the globe using only surface transit. No big deal right? After all, Magellan did it 400 hundred years earlier. But unlike previous circumnavigations, this one circled the globe in a north/south direction. Starting in London, they followed the Prime Meridian south to the South Pole, then traveled to the North Pole and finally returned to London.

My guess is that it was the presence of thousands of men carrying swords and guns, not the singing, which caused the panic. Their singing couldn't have been that bad.

#561: The 1960s were all over map, both politically and socially. "The Ballad of the Green Berets" enjoyed its fame only months after the popularity of Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction," which was controversial at the time due to it's criticism of the Vietnam war, and US policies in general.
