What made the Pont Neuf new in its time is that it was the first one made of stone... So it outlived all the wooden ones... And is now the oldest bridge in Paris

From what I believe, the skulls weren't from woolly mammoths; they were from a now extinct species of pygmy elephant from Cyprus
