In 1978, a Russian physicist named Anatoli Bugorski accidentally stuck his head in the path of a particle accelerator, and a high energy proton beam passed through his head. It was thought that he received a lethal dose of radiation but he survived anyway, completed his PhD and even outlasted the particle accelerator.

During WWII, the Germans once tried building a fake airfield with planes, tanks, and structures made entirely out of wood. However, it took more time than expected, during which British RAF fighters observed the activity. Rather than taking out the fake airfield, the British waited for the Germans to finish. Afterwards, they sent a single British RAF pilot to fly overhead and drop one fake, wooden bomb on the airfield.
