About 1014: They scored a goal against Italy and outlasted them through sheer discipline.
But that's not the best part of their story. They played their 3 group matches in Middlesbrough. Out of curiosity, the locals went to watch them. Slowly but surely, that curiosity grew into sincere support.
So much was their support, during that game against Italy, the local fans eclipsed the 3,000 Italians on the stadium. And when North Korea went to Liverpool to play their quarterfinal against Portugal, several of them traveled along to support their new team. Despite the 5-3 loss, the fans never wavered their support.
36 years later, after a British documentary of these events was filmed, Middlesbrough invited the members of the 1966 North Korean team, who accepted and were received as heroes.
