The Kolyma Highway was built in the Russian Far East starting in the 1930s, using forced labor from Soviet gulags. Nobody knows how many people died building it, but a typical estimate is 125,000. As the ground in that area is permafrost, it is rumored that the corpses of the dead workers were buried under the road itself. For that reason, it is nicknamed the "Road of Bones".
