Executive Orders and Geography

Not being political here - just stating facts. Please keep comments factual.

1. Denali => McKinley => Denali => McKinley

The mountain was known for millennia as Denali. Then renamed to McKinley (first to support Candidate McKinley, then to honor him officially in 1917.) Back to Denali under President Obama, and now McKinley again.

That will likely affect some quizzes, like this one https://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/273367/denali-national-park-quiz but I assume that Denali and McKinley are often interchangeable here. Legally, this one looks to be a valid, but obviously controversial, name change.

2. Gulf of Mexico => Gulf of America

President Trump plans to sign an executive order calling for all federal government maps and documents to “reflect its renaming.” Now I figured that had to be by international agreement, but apparently, "There is no formal international agreement or protocol for the naming of maritime areas, and no international body has the final word on maritime names, although the International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB) seeks to standardise names and resolve disputes."

So I ask you, without bringing any MAGA or anti-MAGA sentiments, how do you feel sites like JetPunk (and National Geographic, news sites, etc.) should handle these changes?

Trump surely doesn't have the jurisdiction to actually alter the Gulf's name

Denali I mean the native name should really be the one used, but McKinley does honour an assassinated President so idk

Not on a National Geographic map, no, nor a JetPunk quiz. But on a map created by US cartographers, sure seems like he can. Executive orders, in fact, rarely affect the rest of us, but can dictate within its jurisdiction. Like no federal employee can work remotely.

To be fair, the name Gulf of America is a priori a more inclusive name as "America" doesn't necessarily refer to the United States but rather two (or one) entire continent(s). Thus it can refer to all three countries which border it.

We will definitely not be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico as it is an international sea.

For McKinley, we'll probably change it. We used to use McKinley, then Obama changed it in 2015 so we switched to Denali. I don't care too much, honestly.
