Got my driver's permit!

Submitted by DarthKnight on January 26, 2026
2 big things that happened this month: Me graduating high school and getting my driver's permit. Very excited!

(Random question: For those who live in other countries, do you call it a driver's permit or no?)

My dad had to renew his license today, so I figured I'd take my knowledge test too (I had taken it once before but lost because of one wrong answer). I had to get 24/30 answers correct.

Anyways, big things coming for me. Super excited.

Could you explain what a driver's permit is?

People in Australia need a learner's permit to learn to drive, and when they finish driving ??? hours, then they get a 'P' plate. And eventually a full driver's licence

A permit lets someone driver with a licensed driver, but with rules and regulations like the hour of day, etc. A license is the real deal, which I assume you know about. But the permit comes first.

Agree with LuckyCat. I have heard it called a learner's permit before though. Seems like a pretty similar concept in general.

Driving and stuff was never part of my schoolwork. I guess for most people it is (driver's ed and all).

Schools don't offer driving classes anymore though. Nowadays we (or just me, idk) find third-party instructors to pay for classes and training, or the DMV. But the DMV is hell so I (and my parents) found a third-party organization that was super helpful and friendly who trained me. I was able to take my driving test under them too, which was great.

Really? I finished Drivers Ed just last year for one of my sophomore classes. And also where I live, a lot of juniors and seniors drive to school instead of the bus (mainly seniors for work stuff)

Congrats on getting your permit.

Here in the UK we call it a provisional driving licence.

Firstly you have to pass a "theory test" probably similar to your knowledge test. This is before you even get behind the wheel with an instructor.

You can only drive with someone that already has a licence and is over 21 until you pass the proper driving test.

You can't start learning until you are 17, unless you are disabled then it is 16.
