Now I am wondering what islands under one square kilometre have never been under the control of a single nation. Does anyone know? It would seem likely to me that there wouldn't be any tiny islands in that category, but who knows. Is it just to rule out small Antarctic islets?
It also got me thinking about islands in space - those wouldn't be under anyone's control, after all. I looked it up, and apparently there are some islands in a lava lake on Io.
