On average this set died at 67 years old. That's a bit younger than modern life expectancy. Several lived to a very respectable age though.

That is interesting. Looking a little closer, 3 of the youngest 4 lost their lives due to drug use (including alcohol). Remove those, and the average jumps to 71.722. Assuming average lifespan for men of 71, and women of 73.5, the expected average lifespan of this list would be 71.714, or 71.555 excluding those 3.

The more you know...

Great quiz, although I have a few criticisms: saying in the description that these people "left us" sounds weird, but maybe that's just my opinion; Nelson Mandela is not notable because he was the first black president of South Africa, he is notable for ending apartheid; describing the communist dictator Hugo Chavez as "leftist" is a bit misleading; Whitney Houston was primarily a singer; it seems odd to include Osama bin Laden in this quiz, as if to extend sympathy to him. That's it. I'm done complaining.

Some of the things you're complaining about are very commonly used phrases or descriptions. So we could say the leftist left us.

You're American, I take it?

Because even though I never knew them personally, Kim Jong-il and Muammar Gaddafi didn't have reputations as the nicest gentlemen in history either, did they?

Mandela ended apartheid? Incredible that such a monumental achievement was the work of only one person. :P

Yes, FW de Klerk and Mandela both received the Nobel Peace Prize for spearheading the ending of apartheid. Their partnership from each side of the racial divide was important to making it happen.

A good time to maybe re-evaluate why you are celebrating someone's death.

The author talks about tolerance, and how otherwise intelligent people celebrated Thatcher's death while calling for compassion when Osama bin Laden died. It's a really interesting article that lays bare many modern hypocrisies. Are modern Western societies really more tolerant than we were before? The author says no. You don't get virtue points for tolerating your in group, but only by tolerating those you dislike. Food for thought.
