The black sheep of the family isn't just "the odd one out", it's a disreputable, discreditable or embarrassing member.

I am not sure I agree. All the other ones could be the embarrassing etc. That is the way I most often (actaully almost always) come across it.

More often it is the entire family are bullies/lowlifes/disrepectful/unintelligent etc and there is one that does have respect for others and is caring, has morals and is interested in more than beer sex and gossip. That one is usually the black sheep. The one that rather read than going to a cage fight. That is more likely to take in a wounded animal than to hurt one for fun.

These are just examples.

A black sheep is "a disfavored or disreputable member of a group". or "a person who has done something bad that brings embarrassment or shame to his or her family."

You can certainly use it with irony, as in your strangely-specific example, but its explicit meaning in common usage is strictly negative, and it certainly isn't "more often" used that way.

Yeah, I think that blackball's definition of "to exclude socially; ostracize" would count as banning that person.

Baldrick, you wouldn't know a subtle plan if it stripped itself naked, painted its bottom blue, and danced on a table singing "Subtle plans are here again!"
